He tossed his phone on the bed behind her, his face still showing shock. “What are you doing here?”

She cocked her head, her grin still in place. “Well, why don’t you search that brain of yours, Donovan. I’m sure if given it some hard consideration, it’ll come to you.”

He shook his head. “I…I have no idea what you mean,” he lied. “Is this about August?”

Kincaid stood up, and so I did the same. The second that I did, Donovan turned my way, his face paling when he realized that she wasn’t here alone. Little did he know that he was eyeing the wrong beast.

“Well, then let me jog your memory,” she told him “Eight years ago, an overdose, three assholes covering it up…ring any bells?”

He stepped back, his eyes so wide that I could see them from where I was standing. “Wh…what?” he stammered.

“I’m talking about your little prank gone wrong, you sonofabitch.” Kincaid was no longer grinning like a lunatic. Her face and voice were as hard as granite.

“I…I…”

Kincaid stepped to him, unafraid and unapologetic. “Look, I’m not here for empty threats or to give a fuck about your convenient amnesia, Cooper. I’ve waited eight years to find out what happened to my brother, and now that I’ve finally gotten the answers that my family deserves, I’m done fucking around.”

Donovan glanced over at me, but I just smirked. “Don’t look at me to save you.”

He looked back at Kincaid. “Look-”

“You have two choices in this,” she said, cutting him off. “Confess, spend the rest of your life in prison, rotting like the piece of shit that you are. Or…I ruin your entire life, the lives of your family, your friends, even your motherfucking neighbors, and all that before killing you.”

He straightened at that. “You can’t kill me,” he rasped out. “Are you insane? I’m a Cooper. I’m a member of-”

“I don’t give a fuck if you’re the goddamn Pope,” she seethed. “If you think that I won’t kill you, try me, Donovan. In fact, I hope you do get stubborn about this because I want nothing more than to carve your heart from your chest while you’re still breathing.” Kincaid stepped further into his space. “I want to tear you apart, piece by piece, more than I want to take my next breath, so please…please, please, please get stubborn about this.”

I walked over to get her because I was certain that she was two seconds away from bashing his brains in as it was. When I threaded my fingers in with hers, she shot me a look, let out a ragged breath, then looked back at Donovan.

“You have one week to decide, Donovan,” she told him. “One full week, and that should tell you just how much I’m not afraid of you. If I were, I wouldn’t be giving you time to come up with a plan to save yourself.”

“You can’t do this,” he hissed, though his voice sounded weak.

Kincaid grinned up at him. “I’ll see you on Friday, Donovan. Or not.”

With that, we walked out of his hotel suite, and we weren’t down the street one block before she made me pull over, so that I could make good on my promise.

Thankfully, we hadn’t gotten caught.
