However, that plan came to a halt when we pulled up to Kincaid’s building and found her father waiting inside her condo. It made sense that he’d have a key, but it had still surprised me to see him sitting in the kitchen, drinking coffee like he lived here.

“I thought you were headed back?” Kincaid asked as her greeting.

Merrick Black set his mug down on the counter. “I sent your mother back, but I wanted to talk to you before I left,” he explained.

“We were off getting tattoos,” she told him. “It’s been a…wild night.”

Her father’s face softened, and no matter what he thought about all this, it was clear that he loved his daughter. “We’re all scheduled to meet this Saturday in Fairpoint,” he announced.

Fairpoint was where The Order’s headquarters were based. The entire organization was handled like the business that it was, so it stood to reason that there’d be an actual building where all that business was conducted. The members came and went from there daily, doing what they did to keep the organization going.

“With the entire panel?” I asked.

He nodded. “It’s just a formality,” he replied. “Ansel, Jonathan, Walter, Mitchel, and I had a little talk after you kids left the church, and everyone’s on the same page.”

“Meaning?”

Merrick shot me an impatient look. “Your father and Jonathan are taking full responsibility for Donovan, and everyone has agreed to keep their opinions of your marriage to themselves.”

My chin lifted. “How magnanimous of you guys,” I deadpanned.

“Son, it’s been a long night,” he sighed. “And an even longer couple of days. All of this has been a lot to process.”

I thought about how I felt when Kincaid had finally confessed what she’d been about, and I was just her boyfriend. I couldn’t imagine the emotions that Merrick Black was feeling after finding out that his daughter’s been on a quest to destroy the very organization that he’d held in such high regard. He’s already lost his son, and to find out that your daughter had been putting herself at risk had to have been rough.

“How do you feel about our marriage?” I asked, curious.

Merrick didn’t say anything for a few long seconds. When he finally did, he was looking at me and not Kincaid. “I think you two kids have the potential to be very destructive together,” he replied honestly. “However, I know that no one will ever love my daughter as much as you do. I believed you when you said that you couldn’t be without her.” He looked over at Kincaid. “All I want is for you to be safe and happy, honey. That’s it, that’s all. If Fox makes you happy, then I’m happy for you. And I know he can keep you safe if you’ll just let him.”

“Thanks, Dad,” Kincaid replied simply.

He nodded to us both. “I need to get going. I’ll see you both on Saturday. And just so you know, they’re calling everyone, not just you two.”

“Even the girls?” I asked, a bit surprised.

“Everyone,” he repeated before he kissed Kincaid on her head, shook my hand, then saw himself out the door.

Once the door was shut, Kincaid looked up at me. “I love you,” she said. “I love you, and I will always love you.”

“You think I don’t know that?” I asked as I circled my arms around her.

“I want you to more than know it,” she said. “I want you to feel it.”

Little did she know that she was all I felt. “I do, baby,” I assured her. “I do.”
