Spencer is buckled in his car seat and I slide into the driver’s seat, pressing the start button on the dash and playing today’s latest hits on the XM radio.
I put my cell phone in its holder on my dashboard and pull out of the driveway.
As if she could sense I was leaving, Rachel’s number pops up on the car screen.
“Seriously?” I say to the touch screen on the car before answering the call. I put on my perkiest voice that I can muster. “What’s up?”
“Uh oh,” Rachel says into the phone. “What’s wrong?”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re perky,” she says. “You’re never perky this early. Usually the washer is broken or Jenna was being a tween.”
I sigh, hating that she knows me so well. “I don’t know,” I say. “I just have a super weird feeling.”
“Are you sick?”
“No.”
“Oh shit. Don’t tell me you’re pregnant again.”
“I’d have to have sex to get pregnant.”
“Still no sex?”
“Well, it’s hard to have sex when the penis is attached to the pissed off husband who’s sleeping on the couch,” I say, feeling my chest deflate as I exhale.
“At least you got what you wanted,” she says. “Anyway, I’m actually calling just to tell you that the stranger was exactly what we all predicted.”
“A one-night stand?” I ask.
Rachel laughs. “Not only that, but he was the guy that interviewed Laurie for her new job. Turns out she did a little side work to make sure she was locked in.”
“Oh my god!”
“Yeah! She took the job out of town figuring she could keep her personal life separate from her work life.”
“How’d that work out for her?” I ask sarcastically.
“Obviously she nailed it.”
“Oh the puns,” I groan.
“You love me.”
I’m silent for a minute as I flip on my turn signal and head down the next street. Spencer is looking out his window at the trees that are dancing by.
“Where are you going?”
“To the store,” I say as Spencer makes a noise and starts cooing at the outside world.
“I thought you did that yesterday.”
“I was supposed to.” I let out a breath of frustration. “Yesterday didn’t exactly go as planned.”
“And you have Spencer? I think I just heard his little voice.”
