“You feel better?” I ask.

“You’re a fucker! Do you know that? You’re sleeping together, it’s as plain as the nose on your face. Damn, how long have you been fucking with me?”

“There is nothing going on, Edgar, stop it,” she tells him.

Her confession shatters something inside me. A pain that ravages everything in its path. It hurts me to hear from her mouth that she and I don’t matter. At that moment I understand what I did to her by denying what was between us. This choice I made to protect my friendship, I didn’t think it could have turned against me and it hurts. It really hurts.

“Shut up,” he says to his sister. “I can see from your face that you’re lying!”

“Calm down,” says Leo, stepping in front of him. “You lower your voice! Being pissed off doesn’t give you the right to act like an asshole.”

“Don’t you care? To know that they kept this from us? Damn, you guys were supposed to think of her as your sister! You don’t fuck your sister, Jones.”

I run my free hand through my hair, staring at Edgar’s face, which is breaking down as he relives the events of the past few days. I can tell by the look on his face, that he is moving from me to her at full speed.

“Because we should have consulted you about something that’s none of your business?” I ask sarcastically.

I know I shouldn’t provoke him, but the situation is suffocating me. I’m suffocating to see her here without being able to touch her, to know that my friend is still mad at me without being able to justify myself. So, I do what I do best, provoke.

“So that’s it, you finally confess?”

Edgar pushes the hand Leo has kept on his shoulder off. Leo shakes his head, silently urging him not to hold back. I keep my back straight, ready to take a beating despite my aching muscles and shortness of breath.

“How long had this been going on?” Edgar demands.

“Edgar,” Scarlett sighs. “Please don’t do this.”

He raises his hand to silence his sister without taking his eyes off me.

“How long? Nolan.”

“Three weeks.”

He closes his eyes, and his eyebrows frown, not in annoyance but in pain. The pain of not having seen it coming.

“Damn.”

“I was going to tell you,” I say.

“Get out of there.”

He glares at me with disdain.

“Get the fuck out of here,” he yells. “Or I swear I’ll beat the shit out of you.”

“Ed, you’re going too far. You don’t want to let him at leastexplain himself?” Leo asks.

“I don’t want to hear anything from him anymore. A few days ago, he swore to me that there was nothing between them. This guy is lying through his teeth!”

“He must have a reason,” Leo defends me.

“Did you know about this?” Edgar asks him.

Leo is silent for a moment, takes a quick look at Scarlett before saying, “I had my suspicions.”

“I hate you,” Edgar snaps. “All of you.”

Without a word, Edgar leaves Scarlett’s room and disappears. I was ready to take a beating, but the feeling of rejection is worse. I turn to Scar, who shoves a hand in her pocket and clinks a pair of keys on her desk.
