Movement in the room catches my attention, it’s my boyfriend. His curiosity must have pushed him to check on me. Besides, he questions me with his eyes. In response, I just shrug my shoulders.

“I have bad news.”

Oh, no… what’s going on? Does he… Does he…

“Unfortunately, your father passed away.”

I suddenly sit up, the water around me churning and almost overflows out of the tub.

Hendrik is dead?

How? Why is he dead? I never thought I would receive such a phone call. Hendrik the Immortal, as we called him when we were teenagers. That day has arrived.

How… How doeshefeel?

“You are still here?”

“I… Yes, excuse me.”

“The funeral will take place this Friday.”

So soon?

“I would think that…”

“Your presence would be appreciated. Right after the ceremony, your father’s will—”

“Stepfather.”

“Excuse me?”

“He is my stepfather, I mean, well, he was.”

It’s necessary for me to make it clear. I refuse that anyone thinks that we were related by blood.

A silence of a few moments instills a slight uneasiness between us. Mr. Linderoth hastens to continue, “It’s essential that you be there for the reading of the will.”

Did Hendrik leave me something? He never did anything good for me. This man ruined my life.

“All right, I’ll be there,” I say resigning myself to my fate.

“See you Friday. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. I’m sorry for your loss, Miss Granberg.”

“Thank you.”

What else to say in such situation? I never knew it and yet I experienced the deaths of my parents.

“Who was it?” my boyfriend Rikard asks.

“The Ekman’s lawyer, Hendrik is dead.”

He is silent, compassion is not part of his personality. I usedto be attracted to him; he didn’t think I was a fragile thing, but now this cold side makes me nauseous.

Rikard sits on the edge of the tub and runs his fingers through the water.

“Damn, it’s frozen. Why are you doing this?”

The cold water is punishing me for being so stupid, so weak.
