Thanks to my own novel hero who is always up for taking pictures, listening to me talk about my ideas, letting me write for a whole day without flinching, hearing me complain when I don’t like something and above all being by my side. You pushed me to get into publishing and I can’t thank you enough forbelieving in it as much (if not more) than I do. Now you’ll have to agree to read one of my books, otherwise you’ll never know if it was really worth it!

Thank you to my ladies in the shadows. To Juju for being a crazy beta. You always push me to do my best. Even if sometimes you make me doubt, change my mind, question me about many things, you make my stories so much better. So, thank you for being you and for being there. To Vivi, for your wise advice, your kindness, your eagle eye and your unfailing support. You are a crazy pillar of strength!

At Pipelettes, this publishing adventure, we dreamed of it!

To Clémence and Flora (yeah, yeah, hello friends). The miles are there, and the years go by, but I love you very much!

To Éditions Addictives, for their trust, and to the whole team behind it, who are doing a crazy job.

And finally (the best for last?): a huge thank you to Juliette, my editor, for believing in me. You have made my stories into little gems and it’s always a great pleasure to work with you!

Your Power Over Me

Prologue

I have always admired the Northern Lights, considering this natural spectacle to be unique and out of the ordinary. It’s the expression of the sky. Every night, the earth communicates to us through these dances how beautiful, unique, and precious it is. And despite this beauty, I can’t help but feel sad that this will be the last time, the last image I will see before I die. And that my world will never again be made of these pretty colors, as I sink deeper and deeper into the darkness of these icy waters.

Water. A beneficent element that brings life. Without it nothing would exist. It can also be a source of many misfortunes when the oceans rage to destroy everything in their path.

For my part, I see it as a painful element that serves as a punishment.

Lying in my filled bathtub, I stare at the drops falling from the faucet with extreme slowness.

The calm before the storm. This sentence has never seemed truer than in this moment.

My cell phone rings, breaking the religious calm of the bathroom. Using a towel placed near my head, I wipe my hand and grab my phone from the wicker cabinet behind me.

Unknown number.

Who could it be?

“Hello?”

“Miss Granberg? Mr. Linderoth, I’m the lawyer for the Ekman family.”

Ekman.

A shiver runs through my whole body at the mention of this name. It’s been a long time since I heard it. My heart tightens; painful emotions try to surface. No, no, no.

How did he get my number?

“What can I do for you?”
