“That’s good to know,” he admits. “My name is Corey Burtton.”

He holds out his hand to me and waits patiently for me to take it in mine. A little confused by this far from casual introduction, I play the game and introduce myself.

“Scarlett Martin.”

He straightens up, running his fingers through his short-cut blond hair.

“OK, so it’s not a guy but abrother.”

“I’m the little sister of the Terriers’ captain, yes.”

“Just my luck.”

He pulls back a little, laughing as he looks away from me.

“You’re going to tell me that after approaching a girl in such an unsubtle way, you’re going to give up as soon as you learn that she’s related to a player?”

I turn around, leaning against the counter to fully face my interloper. The girls are probably in the living room and evenif the apartment is crowded, no overflow is to be expected this evening. The first to arrive is the first to be served at the captain’s house, and as soon as the acceptable limit is reached, no one is allowed to come to the party. The neighbors are quite lax and although we’re clearly making too much noise, the guys have never had any issues with the police.

“It depends on whether that player’ssisteris willing to cooperate.”

“Ask her,” I say in a teasing voice.

I promised Paige to talk to a guy. And Corey Burtton is the first to dare approach me, without fear of my brother. Well, not to the point of running away like a rabbit, at least. Instead of leaving, he stands in front of me, smiling at me. He slowly comes closer and almost puts his mouth on my ear. His warm breath causes a special sensation in my lower stomach and I thank the alcohol running through my veins for making me feel that way. Sober, it would certainly not have had any effect on me.

“I’ve been watching you all night,” he whispers. “I like you very much and I would be delighted if you spent some time with me tonight.”

I put a hand on his chest and chuckle, gently pushing him away.

“Isn’t that what we’re doing?”

He chuckles, his eyes locked on mine. A gleam of challenge, mixed with undisguised interest, shines in his irises. There is something attractive about him. Maybe because he’s the exact opposite of what I’m looking for in a guy.

He’s not Nolan.

“And with comeback. I like this! You’ve piqued my curiosity, Miss Martin.”

I’m about to reply but Corey’s body hits mine and a cold liquid wets my tank top. I gasp as I feel the alcohol spread overmy chest and stomach, letting out a surprised little cry.

“Shit, Scarlett, I’m sorry!”

Some guy wearing the Terrier jacket who just bumped into Corey isn’t even paying attention to us. I glare this tall guy, short haircut, thick build, and slightly broken nose. I don’t recognize the player. Probably a new kid who thinks he can walk around an apartment as if it belonged to him. Loser.

“Hey watch it!”

The guy doesn’t hear me, or simply ignores my remark, focusing on what he’s telling the chick in front of him. Corey rushes to the cabinet behind him to grab some paper towels. He hands me the napkins quickly, refraining from putting his hands on me to limit the damage he has inadvertently caused.

“It’s not your fault,” I say, wiping off the excess. “I’m going to change.”

“You live here?”

I simply nod and walk around him.

“Will you wait for me?”

His smile radiates across his face and he raises his empty glass in my direction.

“I’m not moving from here.”
