It’s only been two days, damn it!

“Breathe!”

Paige’s warm fingers grip my wrist. I look at her, realizing I’m holding my breath and digging my fingernails into my palms.

“I hate him!” I say.

“I know. He’s a jerk.”

“Stop focusing on him tonight,” Carol blurts out as her date is dancing right behind her. “He’s not worth it.”

We officially met Mitch, her medical student she met on an app. As soon as he opened his mouth to tell us a bunch of hilarious anecdotes, I knew he was just perfect for Carol. Funny, full of life, confident, and really caring. I also believe that he paid for the first two rounds and didn’t let go of his date. He could have been flirting, gravitated around the girls present this evening, but he didn’t. And that makes me really happy for her.

“I can’t help it!”

“You know what?” Mitch adds, leaning in my direction. “You should make him jealous.”

I chuckle, ignoring the swirl in my stomach at the mere mention ofjealousNolan.

“To be jealous, you have to be interested. The only thing I’m going to get is my brother’s wrath.”

“The blond guy over there?”

He nods toward the back of the room where I see Edgar fondling a girl on one of the couches.

Disgusting.

“I think he’s distracted,” Mitch says.

“Even so, it definitely seems desperate if I do that.”

“No, it will especially allow you to see if it’s really screwed up with this guy. He kissed you, right?” Mitch asks.

I nod, unable to figure out why I told him that part of the story when I’ve only known him for three hours.

“If you ask me, he’s anything but insensitive.” He glances over my shoulder. “And really, you are much more beautiful than this girl!”

“Thanks for the support.”

“How about this guy?”

Paige discreetly shows me a guy not far away who, with a different style, could be handsome. The nightclub shirt is really not my type. He mostly looks like a guy who thinks he’s Bill Gates.

“Daddy’s boy,” I growl.

“Who cares,” Carol adds. “He will do just fine.”

I have no time to protest that the girls start dancing more and more energetically, making a few moves to shift me into the legs of Bill Gates Junior. I’m this close to getting out of here, but when his hands wrap around my waist behind my back and my gaze meets Nolan’s dark eyes, I have a tiny hope that this screwed up plan work a little bit.

“Want to dance?”

The deep voice in my ear brings me back to reality, forcing me to take my attention away from Nolan. I turn away and give the best smile to the guy in front of me.

“My name is Joe.”

“Scarlett.”

“Pretty. The first name too, by the way.”
