He gets up from his chair and taps him on the shoulder, startling Andrew. I giggle as Leo gives me a quick wink, then disappears from my field of vision. Andrew remains standing in front of me, looking a little surprised by the turn of this conversation.

“What was that?”

“My watchdog,” I joke.

“I think I have embarked on a chivalrous epic. You’re not going to be easy to woo, am I right?”

I chuckle, looking in spite of myself in the direction of the barwhere Nolan was a few minutes earlier. He still hasn’t returned, and I finally return my full attention to the table. Andrew has settled into the chair next to me, putting down his drink while ignoring his buddies behind me who are calling him.

“I think they’re trying to get your attention,” I say.

“They just want to ruin my plan.”

I laugh, run my fingers through my hair and stare at my empty hands.

“What can I get you?”

“The waiter is supposed to bring me something,” I say, squirming in my chair.

I look around, hoping to spot the guy who came to pick up my mess, but instead, it’shimI see. He’s leaning against the wall not far from Edgar and instead of being focused on what my brother seems to be saying, he’s watching me with his arms crossed. My stomach twists and I immediately look away.

“He’ll probably be back soon.”

My voice is shaking and I’m having a hard time not continuing to squint to my right. I feel like he still has his eyes on me. The feeling this causes in me is indescribable, so much so that I have no idea what Andrew is telling me.

What the hell am I doing with him again?

I cross one leg over the other, trying to get into a more comfortable position while tapping the table with my fingertips.

I need to calm down, stop thinking about him, looking for him. If Paige was here, she would tell me to open up to others, to let guys talk to me, to stop blocking myself.

But she’s not here, and I’m alone with all my doubts.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“It’s just warm in here,” I say. “Will you excuse me? I’m going to the bathroom.”

I straighten up quickly and rush away from the table. I head quickly to the back of the bar, finding the restrooms withoutdifficulty. A stench of urine stings my nose, and I grimace before dipping my face under the water. Wiping off my make-up that smudged in the battle, I take a few more seconds to breathe.

I needed to get out, to meet people.

Not to watch Nolan flirt.

Not to be surprised by Leo.

Not to have to make small talk with a guy I don’t know.

I shouldn’t even be here anymore.

I take a breath and come out of the restroom, ready to leave this bar to go home. But I run into a body as soon as I walk through the door and an alltoorecognizable musky scent makes my heart pound.

Nolan.

I look up at his tense face and glare at him.

“What are doing with Peals?”

I arch an eyebrow at his serious expression.
