“Looks like you missed me!”

“Not at all,” he says, placing a kiss on my jaw. “I was fine without you.”

I give him a playful slap behind the neck, and he laughs, making my ear vibrate. He releases me and I shift from his grip, leaning against the counter where he has opened a bag of cookies that he’s shoveling in his mouth.

“How was your day?”

I shrug my shoulders.

“I got a D in business law. The teacher embarrassed me in front of the whole class,” I say.

“On the paper you did with me at the library?”

I nod with a disgusted grimace.

“I’m sure he graded you like crap. You knew the subject by heart.”

“I must have missed something,” I say.

“Or this teacher doesn’t know how to correct.”

“Or I suck,” I say.

Nolan chuckles and crosses his arms over his chest. I focus for a second on the vein that swells in his neck and he winks at me knowingly.

“It’s true, you’re a disaster, Miss Martin.”

“Disaster?” I say, outraged. “Me, disaster? I think you’ll besleeping alone tonight, Mr. Jones.”

“Would you dare leave me alone in the dark?” he asks taking a step towards me.

“In a cold bed?”

One more step.

“Abandoned?”

Then a new step.

“Without warmth?”

I find myself pressed up against the counter.

“Without hugs, withoutanything?”

I place two hands on his chest and stop him from leaning closer to me.

“You won’t get me that easily,” I say.

“You think?” he whispers against my lips. “I don’t think you’re going to resist me tonight.” He leans into my ear and his breath makes me shiver. “Because I really want to show youhow muchI missed you. My tongue has a lot to tell you.”

I sigh, closing my eyes, my legs shaking and my heart racing. Nolan pulls away, leaving me to my fate to get a glass of water, giving me a playful smile.

“You’re all talk so far,” I say confidently. “I can’t wait to see if you really can really put your money where your mouth is. Apparently, it’s the ones who say the most who do the least.”

He shrugs, taking a sip from his glass while staring intently at me.

“I guess we’ll see about that tonight, then.”
