I hadn’t been this awkward or clumsy before. I guess I hadn’t expected the Demigod of Death to kiss me in public.

A realization clicked. Héctor was staking a claim, loud, clear, and lethal, so no other man would dare to cross him and make a move toward me. And where else would be a better place to make his statement known than the dining hall that hosted thousands of people, including all faculty, soldiers, and students?

I hadn’t realized my straightforward knight could be devious as well.

Yelena and Nat, who were more knowledgeable about the demigods than I was, had warned me that they were extremely territorial and possessive. It wasn’t something they could help—my men had been born aggressive.

Yet I wasn’t upset with Héctor. I belonged to him. Sooner or later people would learn that. The descendants gossiped worse than old wives.

I tried to straighten my toes, which had curled from that blazing kiss, and looked around for a second. The supernatural males had definitely dimmed any interest for me in their eyes after Héctor’s blunt demonstration to warn everyone that I was his.

“Uh, Héctor,” I said. “Maybe next time you can give me a heads up when you come to see me?”

Héctor only gazed down at me with doting amusement. He looked like he wanted to grace me with another smoldering kiss, and I bet that I’d go for it.

“I’ll see you tonight, lamb,” he said, light and shadow swirling in his eyes. “I’ll pick you up at nine for a treat of crème brulee.”

My eyes sparkled. “Crème brulee, you say?”

He nodded with a smile and strode away without waiting for me to confirm the date. Then, instead of exiting through the door, he teleported out of the Hall of Bridgewater.

Everyone returned their stares to me, shell-shocked and waiting for me to roll my eyes back and fall in a heap.

“You didn’t...” Rebekah stammered. She had declared that whoever the Demigod of Death touched would die.

“Drop dead?” I finished for her. “Guess I’m just too stubborn. Who would want to go to Hades’s Underworld after being kissed like that?” I pulled my lips back in a half-grin and a half-snarl, my warning gaze sweeping over girls at tables all around us. “But I don’t suggest any of you be foolish enough to try because I’m the only one who’s immune to his death touch.”

“Why and how?” someone from a few tables away demanded, wanting my secret recipe.

Well, I’d just have to reveal my relationship status to prevent some moths from throwing themselves at death’s flame.

“Because the Demigod ofDeathis my destined mate,” I announced.

“Now I don’t stand a chance with you, do I?” Clayton broke the disappointed silence all around, his tone tinged with regret. “I’m always half a step too late, despite being the alpha of all shifters in the Other Academy.”

“Here comes another demigod!” a girl from a neighboring table called. I sensed that she was a fairy and saw that she was a dazzling one.

Yelena laughed. “Oh, give it up.”

Yelena might not have known that the death demigod could kiss me, since this had all happened so fast and I hadn’t yet told her and Nat anything about my relationship with Héctor, but she’d seen how Axel acted around me.

The demigods were as subtle as a train wreck.

“Mari?” Yelena asked, and I read the message in her eyes. She’d cover up for me if I ever wanted to hide under the table.

I’d just kissed Héctor and declared that the death demigod was my mate. And now, with Axel strolling toward me in his confident, territorial gait, she had every reason to worry that I might not be able to handle the situation.

The demigods weren’t known for sharing. Possessiveness was in their every bone.

It was too late to hide now, though, and I wasn’t exactly the hiding type.

“Cookie, there you are,” Axel called to me with a grin. “I’ve been looking for you.”

The hall resumed its former silence as every gaze locked onto the cocky Demigod of War. Axel, as a fourth-year, was known by the student body for leaving behind a trail of trouble and broken hearts in his careless path.

I waved him away frantically. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I didn’t want another monkey show or drama.
