What had happened to this new version of Marigold?

What kind of darkness and evil dwelled in me that I could contemplate murdering the demigod who had defended me?

Could I blame the demon blood in my veins if what Loki had revealed was the truth?

But how could I go on without constant fear in the demigods’ realm when Paxton knew my secret origin and held my fate in his hands?

I swallowed, unable to decide my next course of action. Cold sweat soaked me and drenched my fancy gown, even though Loki was gone.

A body on the ground stirred and groaned.

Both Paxton and I swept our gazes to the sudden motion.

Brittney slowly sat up, glaring at me wild-eyed and full of hate and fear. Then she spotted Paxton, and her malicious eyes shone with victory.

She thought she’d found the very best person to rat me out to. She didn’t know that Paxton had learned about my dirty little secret before she’d been knocked out cold.

“Revered Demigod of Sea,” she started, “I must report—”

I heard the snap of her neck breaking. She dropped dead in a heap.

I lifted my gaze to Paxton, and he held my look of accusation. There wasn’t the slightest remorse in his violet eyes for cold-bloodedly slaying a first-year initiate.

“I accessed her weak mind,” Paxton said in a low voice. “She betrayed you to the demons in order to remove you as her rival. Any threat to you must be eliminated. Anyone who’s a danger to you can’t be allowed to live.”

He’d killed her to protect me and my secret?

“What about you?” I asked harshly, my eyes cold, distrustful, and traumatized, as I couldn’t repel this chill from sinking into my bones like an endless icy fog.

“I’m the last thing you should worry about, Buttercup,” he said. “And you won’t whisper a damn thing about what really happened here to anyone, not even to your beloved Héctor.”

He no longer mockingly referred to me as a princess, because in fact, I might just be one.

The Dominion sentinels reached us with shouts and weapons, and then Zak, Axel, and Héctor all arrived at the scene, lightning, whirlwinds, and death shadows whipping the air with their outraged roars.

The Demigod of Sea flashed his white teeth savagely and whispered, “I’ll take care of you, Buttercup.” His words in my ear sounded like a promise and a threat all at once. “Whether you like it or not.”

Iwas a bastard.
