“You're nothing but an animal, I'm simply treating you as such. You're getting what you deserved.”

“If I'm an animal and you had sex with me what does that say about you?” Emily goaded, hoping it might be sufficient to make him angry enough to kill her right here and now.

He leaned in, his face so close she could feel his breath on her skin. “It says I'm a monster.”

With that, he flipped her over and pushed inside her. She cried out at the feel of him invading her body. Apparently, there was a little life left in her yet. Enough to feel pain and degradation as he raped her again.

Emily wished for death.

11:03 A.M.

“I got here as soon as I could.” Summer engulfed her in a hug the second she opened the door.

Aggie nodded, sniffed, and returned to her spot on the couch. The walk from Nick’s place to hers had taken her a couple of hours. She must have looked pretty much like a zombie to anyone who saw her. She certainly felt like one. She felt like the bottom had dropped out of her world. She had trusted Nick, loved him, and she had been nothing more than a tool in a game he was playing.

When she’d gotten home, she’d called her best friend, then put on her pajamas and curled up on the sofa. She had craved a steaming hot shower, but with the cast on her arm, she wouldn’t have been able to enjoy it. So instead, she had just sat on her couch and cried. There were so many emotions swirling around inside her. Pain, humiliation, mortification, anger, fury, hurt, they filled her up until the only way she could get some release was through her tears. She had been crying ever since she had found out what Nick had done.

“Honey, you sounded like a mess on the phone, and you look even worse in person. What happened?” Summer sat beside her.

She hadn’t been able to get out many words over the phone. All she’d managed was to tell Summer she needed her and ask her to come as soon as she could. She was no longer afraid to be alone in her home. There had never been anything to be afraid of. Her attack was nothing more than a stupid ploy for Nick to attempt to gain her trust so he could pump her for information about her father, who for some reason he believed was a murderer. The intruder had probably just been Nick’s partner, back to scare her some more so she would be further seeking comfort and security in Nick’s arms. And like the idiot that she was, that had worked like a charm too.

“Okay, Aggie, you're scaring me. What is going on? Did you hear something from that detective about your attack?”

Shaking her head, she was ashamed to put into words just what a fool she had been. Again. She’d told Nick that he didn’t know what love was, but apparently, she didn’t either. No one could claim to fall in love as many times as she had, or be engaged twice to losers, or claim she was in love with someone who organized for her to be attacked so he could use her, and understand what love was. She really was an idiot.

“Did something happen to your dad, or Andrew?”

She shook her head.

“One of your sisters?”

Another shake of her head.

“Are you sick?”

Shaking her head.

Summer winced. “Pregnant?”

The possibility of that hadn’t occurred to her before now, but she and Nick had used protection last night so it wasn’t likely. Still there was always that possibility.

“Oh, my goodness, are youpregnant?”

“No, at least not as far as I know,” she finally found her voice.

“Aggie,” Summer sounded exasperated now. “Tell me what is going on.”

“Nick … he … he,” she gasped out between sobs. If she hadn’t been crying for a solid three hours, she wouldn’t have thought it was possible for a person to produce so many tears.

“Nick what, honey?”

“He … he …” the words just wouldn’t form in her mouth.

Catching on, Summer nodded in understanding. “He hurt you.”

Aggie nodded.
