“And I ended up hurting you even worse than I had intended.” His heart was plummeting. “Does that mean it’s over?”

“It means that I've sorted out my feelings for you, and I meant it when I told you that I've forgiven you. I thought it made me weak to forgive you after everything you’ve done, but I don’t care if it makes me weak or strong, or if people think I'm stupid or naïve, I don’t care what anyone else thinks, my feelings for you are still there. I still love you. But I don’t trust you anymore. You lied so much that I don’t know if I can ever believe anything you tell me again.”

That was better than he could have hoped for. This time he would give her whatever space she needed, but he also wasn't walking away. She loved him, he had to believe that with time they could find a way to make things work. “Are you willing to give me a chance to fix what I did? To regain your trust?”

The wait for her to answer, even though it was barely a few seconds, felt like an eternity. “Yes. I dowantthis to work, Nick. And I'm not going to try and be difficult, but I also have to be honest, it’s going to take time. I need someone I can trust implicitly. Especially now, after everything that’s happened.”

“I'm sorry,” he apologized immediately. Most of what had happened wouldn’t have if he hadn’t inserted himself into her life.

“You saved my life.” Aggie raised her good hand and placed it over his, which was still cradling her cheek.

“Only after I put you in danger. I'm sorry, Aggie. Andrew wouldn’t have gone after you if it wasn't for me.”

“Maybe not right away, but he would have eventually. He wanted his whole family dead so he was free to pursue killing women without anything to hold him back. While I wish that you had approached me in a different way, I'm glad that you were so determined to stop those crimes. I know you thought it was my father instead of Andrew, but if you hadn’t linked the crimes he never would have stopped. Once he finished with stepmothers, he would have just started branching out. You're a good cop, Nick, and I'm sorry that you didn’t save Emily.”

“I quit my job,” he announced.

“You did what?” Her blue eyes widened in surprise.

“I can't be a cop anymore. Not after what I did to you. I willingly broke the law because all that was important to me was solving that case. Since you changed your statement to no longer implicate Miller and me, I won't be facing prison time, and I probably wouldn’t even lose my job, but I can't do it anymore. I met Naomi’s boss, he owns a private security firm, I spoke with him about it, and he offered me a job.”

“You don’t have to leave your job for me.”

“I'm not. At least not completely. I need to earn my self-respect back as well as your respect. I can't do that as long I'm still there.” Nick was completely at peace with his decision, he knew it was the right thing for him, for Aggie, and for them as a couple.

“I can't believe how much my life has changed in only ten days. How muchourlives have changed,” she amended.

It was truly amazing.Shewas truly amazing. He couldn’t believe that she was really his. He didn’t deserve her. “I'm going to kiss you now.”

“You better.” She smiled.

Melding his lips to hers, he intended to keep the kiss short and gentle, mindful of the fact that Aggie was recovering from life-threatening injuries, but sweet quickly turned to passionate. For someone who shut down his emotions and someone who based her whole life on hers, they fit together amazingly well. She had a lot to teach him, and he was eager to learn. Nick had lost three families, but life had thrown him one more chance, and a life with Aggie was going to make up for everything that he had lost.

Life with Aggie was going to be perfect.
