She wondered how smart Diaz’s men were.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she heard the sound of gravel crunching beneath feet. Her eyes ran the length of the maze and she spotted the next door. It would be perfect.

She moved as quickly and silently as possible, holding her breath as she unlatched the hedge-covered door and slid in. She counted the seconds, knowing it would only take them a minute or so to turn the corner.

The footsteps grew louder and she drew in a calming breath. It was impossible to see them through the thick hedge, so she had to rely on the sound of their footsteps. And she had to time this perfectly.

With every step they took, they were a step closer to death.

She held her breath as one of them walked straight past her, completely unaware she was hiding in the hedge, ready for him. Her left hand was on the door latch, her right holding her weapon, her finger on the trigger.

Her hands were steady, despite the adrenaline racing through her veins.

This was necessary. Every kill she’d made during the last three years had been, but today’s was more than ever.

Diaz needed to be reminded of who she was and what she was capable of.

She was not going to be played by Diaz, Dominic, or Jackson. If any of them thought they could outsmart her, they were going to learn the hard way that they were wrong.

And it was Diaz’s day to learn that lesson.

When he’d taken three steps past her, she pulled the door open, lunged forward, and fired two shots into his back. The silencer helped, but despite what was depicted in the movies, it wasn’t completely silent, and now she’d need to move even faster.

He fell to the ground and she lunged toward him, grabbing the back of his shirt and rolling him over, aided by her foot. She crouched over him.

“Why are you following me?” she asked, her weapon pointed between his eyes.

He blinked, like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. That was the line she’d always toed with Diaz: she made herself visible enough to be valuable, but invisible enough to be dangerous.

Anna knew from looking into this man’s eyes that he’d never seen this coming. This was not how he thought his day would go.

“D—” The sound of his thick whisper was drowned out by thudding footsteps and Anna didn’t wait to hear what he had to say.

She raised her weapon, firing at the two men who ran around the corner, their weapons raised.

They’d heard the shots, and now all Diaz’s men would come.

Bullets sprayed their chests—she fired until she was sure they would drop.

The element of surprise was gone now, and if she didn’t move fast, Diaz’s men would not be her only concern.

The men fell, their eyes widening as they realized their fate.

Anna looked back to the man she was still crouching over, swearing under her breath when she realized he’d said all he was ever going to say.

She pushed on his chest in frustration, releasing his shirt.

She needed to keep moving.

She also needed to hide the bodies in the hedge, but she didn’t know how long she had before the other men came running back, so she left them on the ground, ignoring the pang of guilt in her chest. She hoped no children entered and found them.

She would go back and hide them if she had the opportunity.

But right now, she had two more men to find. One would come from the rear, the other from the exit. Anna sprinted forward toward the next gate. It was around the corner, and her heart pounded in her chest the entire way. She kept her weapon raised, ready for anyone coming around the corner and hurtling into her.

She heard footsteps on the other side of the hedge and pushed her legs faster. She needed to get to the door before he came around the corner.

She was running so fast she almost missed the door. Anna slid to a stop, reaching for the latch, but it wouldn’t open.
