She paused, then lowered her weapon. “Do you want to explain to me why five men were following me?”

He blinked, seeming genuinely confused, which was an odd response from Diaz. “What?”

She studied him a moment, her mind reeling. If they weren’t Diaz’s men, who had sent them? She’d assumed they were Diaz’s because Jackson had told her his men were following her. But she’d spent years with Diaz, and he wasn’t lying—if they weren’t his men, they could be Dominic’s. At that thought, she remembered the whiskey glass and the car.

“Whose car is outside?” she asked, her words clipped.

Diaz’s eyebrows wove together. “What car?”

“The black Charger, Diaz,” Anna said, running out of patience.

“It’s mine,” he said. “I had it delivered this morning.”

Anna raised an eyebrow. This was the first she’d heard about it, and she didn’t believe it.

“And you’ve been drinking out of two whiskey glasses? Who is here, Diaz?” she asked again, her words clipped.

He looked at her a long moment, and then his lip curled up. “Are you jealous?”

She wanted to shoot him now. “No, Diaz, I’m not jealous. I was just shot at and had to kill several men who were following me, and then I come to my boyfriend’s house and there’s a car here I’ve never seen, along with two whiskey glasses. Who is here and where are they?”

“The car is mine. The whiskey glasses are because Rowan was here not long ago. We had a few drinks, and now I’m tired and fell asleep at my desk, as you witnessed. Be careful questioning me, Anna.”

She stared at him. “And the men?”

“I have no idea who you’re talking about, although I’d really like to know. Where are the bodies?”

“In the maze. I didn’t have time to clean up,” she said, pointedly.

He studied her for a moment, then looked her up and down. “Are you okay?”

“Oh, yeah, I’m great,” she said. She wanted to ask him about Dominic, but she couldn’t, because she didn’t have a good reason for knowing about his relationship with his brother without revealing the intel had come from Jackson.

Her thoughts returned to the men.

If they were Dominic’s, wouldn’t Diaz know about them?

Maybe they weren’t working with either of the brothers.

Maybe they were the FBI’s. Jackson might trust her, but that didn’t mean his boss did.

Her veins turned to ice.

If they were FBI, she’d just killed four agents and she was in more shit than she could comprehend.

“I don’t have men following you, Anna. I swear,” he said, looking into her eyes.

Anna exhaled a shaky breath.

She believed him.

JACKSON

“She can’t go around killing people in broad daylight, Jackson!” John’s voice boomed through his phone, and Jackson pulled it away from his ear.

Jackson didn’t entirely disagree, but he couldn’t completely agree. “If you think about it, she did us a favor... it’s fewer of Diaz’s men we need to be concerned about.”

John cursed under his breath. “In broad daylight, with families around?”
