Her eyes swept over the ceiling and walls, looking for surveillance cameras, but she couldn’t see any. That surprised her—but in a facility almost certainly manufacturing illegal substances, maybe it shouldn’t have.

The crank of an overhead door echoed through the dome and she jumped, pressing her back against the tank she was using for cover.

Her heart was in her throat as a black Dodge Charger drove in.

The same car she’d seen at Diaz’s.

Dominic was here.

She squeezed her eyes shut, barely daring to breathe.

The car came to a stop, a door opened and slammed shut, followed by another.

She knew at least two people got out of that car, and she’d bet her life it was Dominic and Diaz.

She looked up to the railing above her head.

She needed to get up there and watch them as long as possible, staying within earshot. Right now, she was too close. If anyone walked around this tank, she had nowhere to hide.

She looked to the railing again. A metal staircase led to the platform, but it was at least twenty steps away.

She considered leaving the way she’d come, but as she looked over her shoulder, she saw one of Diaz’s men. He was the only familiar face she’d seen—the rest seemed to be a different crew.

She broke out in a sweat as panic slithered up her throat.

She crouched lower, barely breathing.

She couldn’t move, but she couldn’t stay.

“Are we on track for the shipment?” Diaz asked.

“Drivers will be here soon,” a man responded.

Anna’s heart skipped a beat as footsteps echoed through the dome, growing louder with every step.

She looked over her shoulder again.

If she moved, he’d see her.

But the footsteps kept coming.

ANNA

Diaz’s shoes came into view and she squeezed her eyes, holding her breath. She could only see one way out of this: shoot them before they could react. She aimed her pistol, her finger on the trigger. Her chest felt like it was under a wall of bricks as fear coursed through her veins.

Diaz’s leg came into view as he stepped around the corner, and she pulled the trigger.

It took her a moment to realize she’d missed.

Another moment to realize why.

He’d paused mid-stride. Something had stolen his attention.

But she’d pulled the trigger, and now all hell was about to break loose.

The shouts came first, then footsteps sounding like trucks roared toward her.

She turned and ran for the door as bullets tracked her.
