I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to include that in the explanation, but Eve told me she wanted to tell him the truth.

“She cheatin’ on me?” He’d just thought of it.

“No,” I said in such a way as to discourage the very thought.

“We’ve not had relations in a while.”

“Relations?”

“You know. She’s not let me fill her donut. With crème.”

“Oh.”

We were talking about that with euphemisms, even.

“I thought she was holding back to make our wedding night special, but now, I’m not so sure.”

More than done with the conversation, I shifted into Prez mode.

“Do I have to remind you about our deal, Hallow? You were supposed to marry this girl. Remember lying to your President here to save her hide last Halloween? Remember Leviathan, that mean motherfucker I made a deal with? You claimed to love her so much you’d lie to your President. Me. But I knew you’d get tired of the girl. No matter. Eve will make a spectacular club whore. Too bad I’ve just taken an Ol’ Lady.”

Hallow stood and took a menacing step toward me. His head jerked sideways.

“Is it you? You been fuckin’ her during your secret sessions at the Big House like everyone says?”

“Hell no,” I roared.

Eve had been coming over to my place to practice. I’d play and she’d sing. We went over some strategies to conquer her crippling stage fright. Nothing else but a laugh or two. Hell, I looked at that woman a little bit wrong, she let me have it. I allowed her sass because I loved her talent. Our meetings were as harmless as could be. Too innocent for a man like me to even admit. And before I’d fallen for Sky, I steered clear of most of the younger women anyhow. Eve was a couple years younger than Sky. She was twenty or twenty-one.

Hallow’s face reddened more by the second. His shoulders tightened as his hands balled up. All useless because he wouldn’t dare lay a hand on me. But fuck, he wanted to.

“I see you’re all alone.” He thought about risking it.

I grabbed him by his shirt, tugged him close, where I was spitting in his face.

“You up to gambling your life. Your brothers would burn that backpack off you.”

I let him go.

He backed off.

“You settled down now?”

He nodded. “Yes, Prez.”

“For fucks’ sake, I just got married myself, brother. I know you and Eve must’ve forgotten because you’ve taken all my goddamn time since. Now farewell, detective.”

“Give Eve a message for me.”

“No. You’ll have to tell her yourself. I’m going back to fuck my wife. You can stay here throwing your pity party with your right hand all you want.”

“Oh, I won’t need my right hand. I’ll come to Royal Road tonight, but not to talk to Eve.”

“Suit yourself.”

On that note, I left.

I couldn’t believe Eve talked me into getting in the middle of their shit. Hallow thinking, fuck, the whole club thinking she was sliming my banana. I let the rumble of the engine take me away. The whole ride I imagined an uninterrupted week with Sky.
