“I've got this,” he told the nurses.
“Come with me.” He winked.
“Ah, alright.” I played along and followed him as he led me through a door away from the nurses.
“Who are you here to see?”
“My wife, man.”
“Oh, you finally got yourself an Ol’ Lady.”
“Yeah. And she's pregnant. And she's been brought here. I need to see if the baby is okay.”
“What those bitches out front don't know won't hurt them. Go on ahead. Go down that hall and look for her.”
“Thanks, man.”
With a clap on the back, I left Josh to look for Sky. Hurrying down the hall, back and forth, peeking behind the curtains and opening the rooms, I didn’t see her anywhere.
The nurses on the floor started to complain.
“Who are you looking for, Sir”
Walking up to the station, I leaned on the counter. “Um. Sky Windburn. I mean, Sky Strick. She's pregnant. She was brought in here about an hour ago.”
Typing away, the woman looked into her computer screen. “There's nobody here by that name.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I'm sure. Maybe you have the wrong ER.”
The only thing I had wrong was my trust in Penelope.
I rushed back to the waiting room. And just like that, she was gone. I mounted my hog to fly back to Royal Road. I had questions for my Road Captain, Riff about his new girl.
Chapter 24
Kingpin
Before you could spit, I had my brother against the wall, his legs dangling.
“I don't know anything about it, man. Yeah, I was fucking her. That's all. Pagan’s the one who hired her. Beat on him.”
“She's done taken my Ol’ Lady somewhere. You’re going to tell me where.”
“I don't know where,” Riff swore.
Letting him slide down to his feet, I banged his head against the wall.
“Maybe she left,” he creaked.
“If she left on her own, why would your girl run off?” I shouted over my shoulder. “Pagan, you need to find her. I want that bitch back here. Stat.”
Riff spoke up, “We’ll get a crew together.”
“No Riff. You're not going on this run or anywhere but to the barn with fucking Goliath until I figure out what the fuck is going on here. Ralph said one of you already betrayed me and are going to work for the mob. Maybe it's you, Riff. You always wanted my job. You know you're never gonna have it.”
“It's not me Prez. There's nothing I want more than to be your VP. And not because I want to be President.”
