“That's bullshit, Riff, and everybody knows it.”

“I sure as shit didn't do anything to your Ol’ Lady. I don't want to die.”

Pagan said, “Prez, before we waste time. We need to think about who has the motive to get Sky out of the way. What about Memphis?”

“Somebody better bring Memphis to me, too.” I shouted, dropping Riff.

As the boys disappeared to take Riff to the barn and gather the suspects, I did something I dreaded, I shot a text to Maddie May.

“Have you heard from your daughter?”

“No. Why? She won't answer my texts.”

I didn’t want to tell her what was going on, but if it helped me find Sky, I had to try.

“She's disappeared.”

“She left you?”

I couldn’t say for sure.

“I'm afraid somebody has taken her. If you hear from her, you need to let me know.”

“There is one thing. Nobody’s at the house in Nashville. Your brother had cameras installed for me there before I left him. I’ve actually been waiting to see her show up on them when she leaves you.”

I hadn’t even thought to check at that house. Ignoring her rude comment, I asked, “Can you think of anywhere else she’d go?”

“She has no one in Nashville, except Leo.”

Her fucking cousin. I left my office to go find Leo. She was on stage naked. I stole her ankle. She kicked me before she noticed who grabbed her.

“Get down and get dressed,” I shouted.

Back in the dressing room, she put on her clothes. I didn’t look away, but I wasn’t looking at her. I was too distraught.

“Am I fired? I swear I can lose some weight.”

“Sky’s gone. Do you know where she is?”

“She actually did it? She left?”

My eyes narrowed. My heart sank. “You mean she planned to leave me.”

“Well, I didn't think she would do it. Her and I talked about it. She was gonna stay here and try to make you jealous so you would come back to her. My idea. And it was working, I could tell. Admit it.”

I couldn’t deny it. “Yeah. I planned to go over to her house and hit a home run tonight, was all. When I got there, she was gone. Penelope said she took her to the ER. But when I got there, Sky wasn't there, either.”

As I talked, Leonora was checking her phone.

“She's not said anything to me about any of this. And she tells me everything.” Scrolling, she went on, “I haven't heard anything from her all night. Not since before she fainted, and you came in here. And I had to get my ass on stage.”

“Well, like I said, I had Penelope check her out.”

“And how was she?”

“Never found out, the bitch took her to the ER, she said, but she's not there.”

Leo tried to text Sky. She tried to call her. I took out my phone and did the same. I didn't know why I hadn't thought of it before. But I’d not spoken to Sky really in the last two weeks. I’d even gone so far as to have blocked her number from my phone.
