There was a quick knock at my door, and I snarled at Horvis as he opened it up and stepped into my room without a damned moment of hesitation.

“How are you doing in here?” His smirk made me ache to punch him in his fucking pretty face, and I forced myself to focus on the moment I was living then—and the moon in the sky above me.

We’d barely managed to defeat the dragons when they rained fire down on us with the Moon above our heads; if they returned and the sun was shining, our lives would end slowly and painfully.

I had to focus.

But the woman somewhere in my castle definitely wasn’t helping me do so.

“Did you touch her?” I snarled at the other man, before I had time to consider how fucked up I sounded when I asked.

The man snorted. “No. She reeks of sweat, and glares at the world around her as if the whole damn place is trying to kill her.”

“Of course she reeks; she’s spent months in my fucking dungeon. Where I put her. Did you know what she was to me when we put her in there?“ I demanded.

“How would I know what she was to you? I can’t sense your fated mate, brother.” He spread his arms out. “What do you want me to do?”

“Where did you put her?”

“Across the hall.” He gestured toward the door.

My shoulders relaxed—just slightly.

“And the others?”

“Typical second-floor guest rooms.

That relaxed me further.

Until I felt the moon begin to set.

Then I swore and closed my eyes, leveling out my breathing and focusing on lifting that damn thing higher in the sky.

Horvis was used to my frequent pauses, and waited until I’d regained control of the globe that was almost constantly threatening to touch the earth. When I finally opened my eyes, the bastard was sitting on one of the stools beside my kitchen, eating the food I’d planned to have for dinner that evening.

Damn him.

“We need to get her out of the castle,” he observed, lifting a spoonful of pasta to his mouth.

Something within me roared at the thought, and I held tightly to the magic I still had wrapped around the moon. “No,” I practically snarled.

“Then you need to fuck her, so you can get on with the mate bond and feel more secure.”

That was an even worse idea.

“No. Mate bonds force both parties to grow more possessive and connected—not less. And in case you’re forgetting, she still tried to kill me.”

Horvis snorted. “Didn’t forget that shit show. I thought you were the one who stopped her knife.”

I shoved a hand over the buzzed hair on my head. “So did I.”

“Well, if you’re not going to solidify the mate bond, then what are you going to do? Move her into your room and declare she’s yours to look at and protect, but not touch? Something tells me she won’t agree with that as easily as you’re probably hoping.”

I scowled at him. “I’m not a fucking moron. Of course she wouldn’t agree to that.”

“Then what’s your plan?” He sprawled his legs out, getting comfortable on the uncomfortable bar stool.

“I have no idea,” I growled back. “Quit eating my food and get the hell out of my room.”
