“No, he showed up here today with another guy from Immigration. They said they wanted a list of all of our people and what special abilities they might have.”

I stared at her, and then stuck a finger in my ear as if I wasn’t sure I’d heard her right. “Say what?”

“Don’t worry, we aren’t giving them the list.”

“What the hell would they even want that for?”

“To be honest, I’m not sure. I was actually about to find out when you decided to barge in on Hugh and I.”

I grinned, “Hey, you were done. I didn’t know that you were into pillow talk now.”

“I’m not into pillow talk, Lena, but Hugh was relaxed, and I was hoping he’d tell me a bit more about the real reason they want the names.”

“What excuse did they give you when they first asked?”

“Said they wanted to protect us, but I’m not so sure that they don’t want to round us up. I’m sure you’ve heard the rumors, too. They said it was for our protection that they know that information, and also to make sure that our people know they have rights.”

“Rights? What rights? We allow them to live.”

“Yes, but they seem to think our serving up our own justice is not appropriate.”

“Fuck them! Who do they think they are?”

“The government,” She replied with a sigh. “It was only a matter of time before they decided that they needed to exert control over us.”

“That’s not happening.”

“Yes, I agree, but we also don’t want to piss off Uncle Sam. We are going to have to figure out what they are really up to, and then go from there.”

“Why didn’t you take his blood then? You could have figured it all out much easier.”

“I don’t know.” She stared at the carpet for a moment, frown lines marring her forehead, “There is something about Hugh.” She paused for a moment and then blinked and smiled my way. “I want him to trust me, show him that I want to trust him, and see what he can do to help us with. Maybe he will tell me the truth. Maybe he won’t. I don’t want to use tricks to get into his head. If I can get him to trust me, maybe he can help us locate Joe Portage.”

“That would be a plus, along with you getting a little rumba in the sheets while you do it.”

“Hey, looks who is talking.”

I grinned at her, “I know, I know.” I threw back the rest of my drink, “And on that note, I’m going down to the bar to find myself a little midnight snack.”

“I’ll walk out with you. I need to go back to the office.”

“Oh, I saw Garrett on my way up. He told me to remind you that the family dinner is set for Saturday.”

She sighed, “Yes, the family dinner. You’re going to be there, right?”

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Not often that we get all our kids, and ex-mates into one room.”

“Your ex-mate,” Kristin said with a laugh, “All of mine are dead.”

I turned to look at her, “Does that ever bother you?”

“No.” She said with a straight face. It was only the slight shift in her eye color that told me otherwise.
