“Alright, do we know anything more about Diane? Maybe we can trace her family and find them that way?”

“Nope, nada, and before you ask, I don’t know anything else on the kid either.”

“Do you know if he’s transitioned?”

“Not for sure, but I’d have to say that he probably is. One guy mentioned that his son does all the business for his father.”

“And his name is Zander?”

“Yep, Zander Portage.”

“Well, let’s do some digging and see what we can find on him.”

“Already on it. I asked Paxton to look into it when I got back tonight. I don’t think we will find anything. We didn’t even know he had a son, and I’m pretty sure that we thought we had his family tree down pat.”

“Yeah, well if Joe Portage has another family, there is a lot we don’t know.”

“I will tell you that if I ever see Joe Portage, I’m going to put a stake between his eyes before I put it into his heart. What a bastard he is.”

A sound had both of us looking toward the bedroom door where Hugh was coming out, his tie hanging loosely around his neck, his charcoal grey suit jacket thrown over his arm. “Did you say Joe Portage? I wasn’t ease dropping, I just thought I heard you mention that name as I stepped out.”

“What do you know about Joe Portage?” I asked.

He shrugged, “He’s been on our radar for a while.”

“Why?” My sister queried before I could. What radar did the guy have going?

“Like you, he oversees certain people. We wanted to discuss the same things with him that we did with you.”

“Do you know where he is?” I asked, bolting to my feet.

He shook his head, “No, I was actually hoping that Kristin might know that.”

“Yeah, well we are both in the dark there.” Kris said solemnly.

“What did you discuss with him?” I asked her.

“I’ll tell you about it later.” She answered and went to Hugh, “You should get going. Your day might be over, but mine is not even halfway through.”

He paused at the door, and I sat back down, watching them from under my bangs. “Can I see you again? I’d like to finish that discussion.”

“You left your card, right?” She said to him.

“Yeah, I did. My cellphone number is on the back. Call me when you have time to talk.”

“I will, and thank you, Hugh.”

He stared down at her like he wasn’t sure if he should kiss her goodbye, or maybe he was trying to figure something else out. I didn’t know and didn’t fucking care.

Kris solved his dilemma by opening the door, and then kissing his cheek before he stepped out. Josh glared at Hugh and I chuckled. Josh was a little territorial when it came to Kristin. Not because he was in love with her—although we all knew he was—but because he felt like it was his soul purpose on Earth to protect her. Especially since he hadn’t been able to protect Alex.

Kristin asked Josh to show Hugh out and told him she’d see him in the office in a little while.

After she closed the door I spoke, “So who was that guy?”

“Hugh McMurphy, Homeland Security.”

My eyes almost bugged out of my head, “You thinking of making a career change and going back into law enforcement?”
