Dinner got underway and there were tons of laughs and talking amongst everyone. By the time we got to dessert, even I had relaxed and was enjoying the atmosphere—it had been too long.
It was as we finished that things changed quickly as Clay and Beckett came to my table with Richard and David. Beckett spoke as I stood, “Mistress, I know you have met these two elders before, but we wanted to introduce them to you again. This is Richard Mears, and David Montauk.”
I shook their hands, “it’s nice to see you both again. Thank you for coming tonight.”
“The pleasure if all ours.” David replied.
“It was an honor to receive an invitation.” Richard stated.
And just who invited them? I had noticed that Beckett said thatwewanted to introduce them to me again.
Beckett looked slightly nervous as he studied me, “Mistress, if we might have a few moments of your time.”
“Is there a problem that I need to be made aware of?” I asked immediately.
“Well, no, but a few of us have discussed the fact that it has been eighteen years since Master Alexander has passed. We think it might be time for you to mate again.”
Something shifted in me, just the tiniest flicker of anger ignited in my belly. “Excuse me?”
He shifted on his feet nervously, “The board has discussed this at length, and we feel that you might be taken more seriously by the breed if you had a man ruling at your side.”
I closed my eyes for a second as that earlier flicker suddenly engulfed me, and I knew that when they opened, my eyes had turned silver for all four men shifted back. “Out!” I snapped.
Several of the chairs at the other tables began to slide back, and I glanced around the room, “If you are not an elder, then leave this room—now!” The room began to clear out quickly, although I felt the presence of Rex, Garrett, Lena, Joshua and Cameron still in the room, along with the four elders.
“Would you like to repeat what you said?”
“I believe you are well aware of what I said, Mistress.” He swallowed—hard.
I laughed, “Oh, yes I am well aware of the words that left your mouth, Beckett, but I was hoping that you might have misspoken. I was merely giving you a chance to take back those words.”
“No, we have given this a lot of thought, and consideration. Both Richard and David would be good matches for you. With your blood consideration, there are not that many in which you can choice from.”
“My blood consideration?” I piqued a brow. “You mean the fact that my blood will kill any vampire that is not old or strong enough to withstand it?”
“Yes,” Beckett said as he lifted his chin. “Kristin, we are going to war soon, and we feel that our people will listen to you better if you have a strong man at your side.”
I glanced between Richard and David, “No offense to either of you, but I’m not interested in having a mate.”
I stepped forward and seethed into Beckett’s face, “And if you ever broach this subject again, I will put a stake in your chest. You do not tell me what I am going to do, or who I shall mate. Do you understand that, Beckett?”
“Kris,” A hand landed on my arm and I spun toward it, coming face to face with Clay, “We are only trying to find the best way to get through this. You could use the support, and you need someone you can regularly feed from.”
“I feed just fine, thank you,” I hissed.
“Human blood does not fill you or give you the strength that you need.” Clay said.
“Kris, you need to take a step back and calm down while we think this over.”My sister’s voice whispered into my head.
I turned to her and knew she was right—well about calming down. There was no way I was going to think any of this over. I was ready to tear all their heads from their bodies. Without another word, I stepped around Beckett and headed toward the door.
“Mistress, you can’t leave now!” Beckett called out.
I lifted my hands, palms toward the door, and sent out a mental message to anyone who was outside to open the door. Both doors whipped back as I reached them and I called over my shoulder, “Yeah, well, fucking watch me.”
