Chapter 8 – Lena

“Oh, man! Did you alljust screw the pooch.” I said the minute my sister was gone.

Clay glared at me, “Lena, you know as well as we do, that she needs help.”

“Actually, I don’t. I think my sister has done a fine job. If she needs help, then I will help her. She sure as hell doesn’t need a man around.” I took a moment to eye David and Richard up and found them severely lacking—even for my tastes. There was no way Kristin would go for either of the stuffy shirts.

“Aunt Lena,” Garrett said softly, “Mom needs someone strong in her life. Someone that she can rely on and feed from regularly.”

“She feeds from lots of people.” I said hastily.

“Yes,” Clay replied, “But she needs a bond that is strong, that can help her heal if she is injured. It’s not like we want to take her power away, we know that she has done a great job, but she needs help. She needs to be stronger. If she were mated to an elder, her strength would be that much greater, and her ability to heal if she were hurt would be better.”

I glanced at Garrett and Rex; boy was Kris going to give them hell later. “Kristin is not going to mate with someone to secure her health or to make her look stronger by having a man at her side. Kris mates for love.”

“She has had her love—twice in fact.” Scarlett said as she approached our group. “It’s time that she focuses on our breed.”

Only twice? I thought it was three times. I huffed out a breath and glanced around.

“You think that she’s not focused on the breed every single minute of the day? Do you realize that the woman who has always wanted to be in control of her life, has absolutely none now!” I growled at the group. “You guys don’t know her like I do. Forty years ago, it was all about her controlling her own life, and she has given up all of that control to live here in a freaking fortress. She can’t even leave the damn building without half a dozen people with her, but she does it because she believes in the breed. She believes in what she is doing—and she’s damn good at it too!”

“The dangers are all around us,” Rex said. “She needs to be protected as much as she can be, we aren’t trying to take her control away, Lena.”

I laughed, “You aren’t? You sure as hell sound like you are. You just handed her two men on a silver platter and said which one looks good enough to eat? Pick one because you’re going to bleed for him, screw him and then and he’s going to be the new Master. You weren’t even giving her a choice in the matter, Rex.”

Everyone glanced around looking at one another, and Garrett sighed, “I’ll try to talk to her.”

I pointed a finger at him, “Oh, no you won’t. You’ll be lucky if your mother will speak to you in the next century. I will speak to her and try to calm her down, and then maybe, you all can have a rational conversation when she doesn’t want to tear you all to pieces.”

Suddenly, Joshua appeared at my side, “She’s gone.”

“Gone?” I asked.

“Yeah, she left the building.”

“No, I’m sure she’s probably up on her patio.”

“I looked; we’ve looked everywhere. She’s gone, Lena.” The usually reserved Josh was close to panic.

“Relax, she’s a big girl, Josh. She can take care of herself.”

“See,” Beckett held his hand out, “She’s irrational. She needs someone around her to keep her calm. I knew she wasn’t old enough to deal with this.”

“Give me a break, Beckett. You just blindsided the woman. It’s not against any rules for her to go off on her own. She’ll be back after she calms down. She might not be centuries old, but she is the scariest damn vampire I have ever seen. She can handle herself, and anything you throw her way.”

“We’ll see about that.” He muttered and began to stalk off.

“Do you have any idea of where she would go?” Cameron asked. “I can try to speak with her. You know I can calm her down.”
