“Mistress,” He bowed his head again before turning the television off and then leaving the room without another word.

I sank to the bed, lying on my side as I stared at Joshua. Why had he done that? Why had I allowed him to? I could have lost him, and I couldn’t afford for that to happen—not ever. Not only because of his ability, but because I truly cared for him.

I closed my eyes dwelling over my earlier conversation with my sister about leaving the hotel—compound—prison—whatever the hell you wanted to call it. While she and the others might not like it, I felt it in my bones that was what I needed to do. I had to go out there and show myself, let others know that I would not cower to Joseph Portage. It was time to change the way we did things, and I was determined to do that—it was time to stop hiding in the shadows.

I felt Josh waking, heard the wisp on the pillow as he turned his head toward me, and I opened my eyes to study him. His dark-green eyes imploring me to understand why he did it.

The reminder of the oath he had taken to Alexander moments before he died, was such a visual in his mind that it hurt my chest to watch it yet again as he played it over. My own oath to him brought back to me with his words, the knowledge that I had indeed broken that, and then the pact that I would never do it again.

I pulled from his wrist, to show him that I was binding myself to him again as I once had, but also to prove to him that I was serious. As I drew his blood into my mouth, I called to my blood asking for it to come back, almost begging for it to return to me—to leave his and allow him to heal properly.

I hadn’t expected it to happen, but it had. How interesting that I could do that. Was I somehow compelling my own blood to respond? Or merely compelling him to force it out? I wasn’t sure but knowing this was going to be vitally important. A weapon that I could use.

What a weapon it would be, too. Force someone to take my blood, feed them mere drops of it to cause the pain to start, and tell them that the only way to live was to tell me what I wanted to know. The ways in which it could be used were countless.

“How do you feel?”

He seemed perplexed for a moment, “I was hurting a lot before you took my wrist. Now it’s only a little bit. How did that happen?”

“I’m not exactly sure, but I want you to keep that between you and me. Can you do that for me?”

“Of course.” He stated emphatically.

“I’m going to let you rest, I’ll send someone up to feed you. I think it would be good for you to feed well.”

“Thank you, Mistress.”

“Any one you prefer?”

“Cora or Paxton,” He said gruffly. “That is who I usually feed from.”

“Very well, I’ll have one, or both of them brought up for you.”

He laughed, huskily, “I don’t think I’m up to two at once, Kristin.”

I smiled down at him, “Just because you have two to take, doesn’t mean you have to take them at the same time.”

His grin was a nice sight to see, “It wouldn’t be the first time.”

I laughed, “Oh, I know it wouldn’t be. I’ll see who is available.” I turned for the door and paused, “Get your strength back, we have things to do, and I’m going to need you to be strong. You’re important to me Joshua, and I need you to stay strong, and be there for me always.” I paused, “Maybe it’s time that you mate, that would keep you strong.”

“Mistress, I’m not sure I’m ready for that.”

“I didn’t think I was the first time,” I paused and laughed, “Or the second time either, but I did it—although I didn’t know I was doing it that time. I was a little drugged up.” The laugh was slightly bitter as the memory of Trent, Gabe and Julian tricking me to drink water dosed with a sleep aide came to mind.

“Yeah, well you might need to drug me up, too.”

“We will discuss it later, Joshua. Get some rest.” I winked at him and was gone.

When I stepped out of his apartment, Ryker, Jett, Lorna and Paxton were all waiting for me. “Oh, good you’re here Paxton.”

“Mistress?”

“Can you feed Joshua for me? He could use strong blood to help him recover.”

“He’s going to be alright?”

“Yes, he is.”
