“Can you at least tell me what it is that you are going to want me to do?”

“Not yet, Zander, not yet. I’ll speak to you again when I know more.”

I tossed my phone to the side after he hung up and pushed open the slider so I could go out on the deck. My arms rested on the railing and I stared at the surf, the sound rushing through my head as another body of water materialize in my mind: A lake, a small lake.

I had no idea where that lake was, or what it meant to me. I honestly didn’t ever remember being there, but the picture in my mind was so damn real that I knew that I had. Sometime in my life, I had stood leaning against a railing and staring out at the calm, dark water.

Maybe it wasn’t a memory, but a premonition of something to come. Could I possible see the future? Was my power not only in compelling people to see what I wanted them to see, but also to see a future that had not yet happened? It was the only thing I could come up with.

I was so stuck in my thoughts, that I didn’t hear Laura come up behind me. I somehow kept myself from jumping at her touch and turned to look at her. She wore a sheer dressing gown that at most times would have attracted my attention. Tonight, I was too frustrated with my father and my earlier thoughts to care much.

“Why are you out here?”

“I just got off the phone with my father. He said things are progressing and told me to lay low for a while.”

“I thought he wanted you out and about?”

“I guess not as much as I have been. He said he wanted a rumor of me to be around.” I laughed roughly.

“Well, why don’t you shower and come to bed. The sun is going to be up soon.”

I sighed as I stared at the horizon. It was lightening and I was tempted to stand here until the sun blazed down on me. The temptation was only fleeting though. I wanted to live. I felt that there was a purpose that I needed to find.

“Go on to bed, I’ll be there soon.” I leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“Come with me.” She said saucily, “I want to do naughty things to you.”

My eyes shifted to her body; she wasn’t a bad way to waste time. “Let me shower first.”

I followed her into the house and went straight to the bathroom where I stood staring into the mirror. When I finally stepped under the water in the shower, the images of the lake washed back over me. In the back of my mind, I could hear a voice, I could almost feel the vibration under my feet of something walking toward me. I clenched my eyes trying to hear more, but the sounds of wind through the trees carried the voice away.

“Come on,” I whispered, “What are you saying?”

I tried to turn, tried to look toward the voice, but I couldn’t. It was like I was frozen with my eyes forward, and then as I was finally able to turn, the memory began to fade just as it landed on a cloudy image of a woman.

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to force the image back. I needed to see what had been right there in front of me, but I couldn’t, and my head began to pound. “Fuck!” I slammed my fist into the stone wall of the shower. Shards of the stone fell to the shower floor and blood dripped from my hand. I stared at it and for one brief weird second wondered why it was red and not blue.

The bathroom door whipped open, “Zander? Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” I rinsed my knuckles under the water. “Go back to bed, Laura. I’ll be there in a minute.”

She stared at me as if unsure if she should leave me or not and then slowly backed out and closed the door. I stared at my hand, watching the skin close as two words began to beep through my chest like a drum in the tune of my heartbeat,blue-blood, blue-blood, blue-blood.
