“Do you have any ideas on who you could take for a mate?”
“Not you too, Clay!” I lamented as I leaned back in my chair and twisted it from side to side.
“I’m not trying to pressure you, Kristin,” He paused. “But if you would consider it, I could fill that position.”
I was rather shocked by his suggestion. “Clayton, I didn’t think you were interested in overseeing the race. It took me a long time to convince you that I needed your help here at my side to begin with. What has made you change your mind?”
He shrugged a shoulder, “I guess being here and helping you has changed my mind.”
“And it has been changed enough that you would want to mate to me?”
He grinned, “I’m not sure there is a man, vampire or human, who wouldn’t want to mate with you, Kristin. You are a beautiful, passionate, thoughtful and strong woman. It’s been many years since I have been mated, perhaps it is time to do so again.”
Chapter 17 – Hugh
Ihad been gone forthree days, and I was finally on my way home. My trip had turned up some useful information, but not a lot. I had learned of a town in North Carolina, along the coast, where there was a large population of vampires. While most of them wouldn’t speak with me, there were a few that would.
The conversations that I had had confirmed information that I already knew. The two factions were heading to war, although many were on the fence as to which side to take. Many believed that their way of life should continue as is, but there were a few others that looked down on me as if I were only a meal to them.
I sighed as I went into my apartment and told the television to turn on with the news. The screen appeared in the living room, and then shifted to the bedroom as I entered there. The big local news story was of the Mistress who had once again graced the public eye by having a meal at one of the local taverns. There were more photographs of her, a few videos of her speaking with people in the establishment, and overall, seemed positive.
The reporter brought up questions as to why she was now coming out into the public eye and wondering what it meant after years of secrecy. I wondered that myself and knew that the only way to find out was to see her myself.
I showered, changed clothes and then was back out on the street, calling for a transport to take me to her hotel. It was close to midnight when I arrived, and while most hotels, would be quieting down at this time of night, the activity level here was abundant. The bar was packed, and more vampires were hanging out in the lobby then the last time I had been here. Was this all part of her plan?
I saw Ryker and her son near the elevator when I entered. Ryker nodded to me as I approached them, but Rex practically sneered at me. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to see the Mistress.” I told him.
“Does she know you’re here? Did she summon you?”
The temptation to get into his face was strong, but I held back. “She told me to come see her when I got back in town.” That wasn’t exactly a lie, we did say that we would talk when I got back.
Someone called Rex’s name and he glared at me as he stepped away. Ryker laughed, “Don’t take it personally, he doesn’t like humans’ period, it’s not just you.”
“I’ll try to remember that. Can you let her know that I’m here?”
“She already knows. Jett saw you come in. I’ll take you upstairs.”
“Thank you, Ryker.”
We made our way up the elevator and he let me into her apartment. “She’ll be right up. If you need anything let me know, I’ll be out here.”
I told him thank you and was surprised that I’d been allowed into her place alone. I stood near the living room and glanced around before I headed toward a collection of photographs on a side table. I recognized some of the people and lifted an older one of her with three men in the photo near a blue car. I recognized Alexander from photographs we had on file, but the other two men were unknown to me. I stared at her, her hair was blonder back then and much shorter. She also had on a police uniform, and I smiled and squinted at the picture. I could just barely read the name on the patch, Fawn Hollow Township.
