Well, now I had a place to research. I set the picture down and went to another one. She was younger in this picture too, although you wouldn’t know it. I only knew it by the clothing that they wore, and the fact that her hair was once again blonder, and shorter. In this one, she stood with a tall male who had short blond hair. He was wearing a police uniform and she was holding an infant. Would that be Rex? If it were, wouldn’t that make the man in the photo Alex’s son? What was his name? I couldn’t remember. I thought I had read it somewhere, but it didn’t come to me.

There were about a dozen pictures and I studied them all. Alex, his son and two other men showed up in her pictures quite often. I studied the one photo as she leaned against the blue car, again dressed in uniform. The man beside her leaned back, his arms crossed, his face devoid of emotion. Beside them was a large dog. Neither of them looked particularly happy in the photo and I wondered why she displayed it. What was the story behind this one? Who was the other man?

The door opened and I turned to see Kristin stepping in. She was dressed in black slacks and a dark purple blouse, again almost see-through and I felt my body come alive. I stepped away from the photos, “I hope you don’t mind; I was looking at your pictures.”

“Not at all.” She strolled toward me, a smile on her lips. “I’m glad you came.”

“Are you?” I asked as she paused in front of me.

“Yes, why wouldn’t I be?”

“I don’t know. I guess I am just trying to figure out why I’m here.”

She looked puzzled, “I thought you wanted to be.”

“I do, but I’m not sure what you want.”

She averted her gaze and stepped around me, “That is a loaded question, Hugh, and not one that I am prepared to answer.”

“You said that when we saw one another again, we would discuss this whole consort thing.”

She poured herself a drink, peaked a brow toward me as she held the bottle and I nodded before she poured another one. She brought my glass to me, then went to have a seat in one of her single chairs. I took the one opposite of her so that we could see each other directly.

“Hugh, do you really want that? To be a consort? You might not understand what that really means.”

“Explain it to me then.”

She frowned as she stared at her glass, “If I bond to you, which can be very dangerous for you, especially with my blood, then in a way, I will own you.”

“Own me?”

“Yes, once a bond is created, it never goes away unless it is replaced by another bond. I could call for you at any time, and you’d likely be unable to resist it.”

“Why would you call me?”

“For company sometimes, but mostly for sex or feeding.”

I chuckled, “Well, it’s not like I’d turn down the sex. You know I wouldn’t.” I paused, “I wanted you to feed from me before, but you didn’t.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Why?”

“I told you why. I was enjoying the fact that it was just you and me, just a man and woman. I didn’t want my nature to come between us. I didn’t want to use you that way.”

“What if I want you to use me that way, Kristin?”

She tilted her head to the side, “Is that what you really want, Hugh? If you enter our world, you become a part of it. Till death doyoupart.”

A nervous laugh bubbled up in my chest, “So it’s like being married to the mob.”

She grinned, “In a way.”

I thought about what she had said. There was a part of me that didn’t want to do it, but another side of myself that was practically begging for it. I’d never been the type to want to be married, so what made me want this so badly? She said she would own me in a way, that I would come when she called. Would I be able to resist that? Would I want to if I was bound to her? Another question stopped me cold and my gaze sprang back to her.

“What did you mean about your blood being dangerous?”

“My blood is very strong, Hugh. Even many of my own kind can’t handle it.”
