“That is a very closely guarded secret, Hugh. You can’t tell anyone about that. Could you imagine what the humans might do if they found that out? Right now—if they kill one of our kind, they don’t always stake them. We have to believe that those souls are coming back, and that one day they will help to build our society to be strong and great again.”

“Or take over the Earth.”

“No, I have no intention of that.”

He sighed, “What am I supposed to do about my job, Kristin?”

“Well, I think right now, you’re going to have to decide what to do about your life, Hugh.”

His laugh was rough and shifted into a groan halfway through as he lifted his glass and threw back the rest of what was in there. He stared at the glass, “Is that why I can’t really get drunk? I’ve tried many times, but I just can’t seem to get there.”

“Yes, that is why. The blood in you that is ours burns off the alcohol almost instantly.”

He shook his head and stared around the apartment as his shoulder rose high and fell. “I think I need to head home. I have a lot to consider.”

“That might be a good idea, Hugh.”

He stood and I took his hands, “I’m here if you have any questions, but I need to ask you a favor.”

“What’s that?”

“I need you to keep what you have learned quiet. You can’t put this information into any reports. You understand that, right?”

He looked contemplative for a few moments, “Yeah, I guess I do understand that. I won’t do anything right now.”

“Thank you.”

“I do have a question for you though.”

“What? Anything?”

“If we have similar blood, would yours still be toxic to me?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Can I try it?”

I shifted back from him, “I don’t think tonight would be a good idea for that. With your blood in me so soon, it would instantly bond you to me. I think you need to decide if this life is what you want. If you do decide to transition, we’ll discuss it later.”

“How would I transition, if that’s what I decided?”

“One of our males would turn you. They would take your blood, bind you to them, and you would do the same. Usually after a bond is complete, your transition would happen quickly. Usually it’s the father that does it, but in this case, we could find you someone else.”

“You couldn’t do it?”

“Women generally don’t. I have been told that it is rather painful that way.

He nodded and his hand touched my face, “I can’t believe that I am like you. Maybe that is why I have this undeniable need to be close to you. I thought it was just because I desired you.”

I took his hand and kissed his palm, “I desire you too, Hugh, but I do believe it is our blood that is calling to one another—calling you home.”

“Then probably better for me to think on this without you around.”

“Yes, I agree.”

I showed him to the door and instructed Ryker to take him down. Hugh and I locked gazes as the elevator door closed and once it did, I frowned. Well, crap! What the hell was I going to do with this?

I went into Angelina’s apartment, Cameron and she were sitting in the living room.
