“Looking for you.” He stated gruffly.

A smile came to my lips slowly, “Oh, goodie! Let the fun begin. Maybe we should go out tonight.”

Joshua turned to me, “Or maybe we shouldn’t. Let’s not push it. Yes, they came here, and they were looking for you, but that doesn’t mean that we should tie a ribbon around your neck and hand you over.”

“You know that’s not what I meant. I’d be interested in what they want.”

“To kill you, Kris. That’s what they want.” He barked out.

“Not immediately. I have a feeling that if his men could get their hands on me, they would take me to him.” The elevator door opened on our main office floor and I stepped out. I was instantly stopped by a strong hand on my arm.

“And if you think for one fucking second that I am going to let that happen, you have lost your damn mind, woman. There is no way I am going to allow those men to take you to him. No fucking way, Kristin. Have you forgotten that I saw what they did to Alex? I watched everyone single moment of his torture, and I heard his heart stop. I breathed in his damn ash! I refuse to allow that to happen to you.”

Joshua had always been passionate about my safety, but this bordered on a mania. I rolled my shoulders back, and glared at him, “Do not forget who you are speaking to, Joshua. I am well aware of what you saw when Alexander died. I have seen it in your head more times than I care to have. It’s time that you got over that and put it behind you. His death was not your fault. In the meantime, do not ever call me something as common as a woman, again. Do you understand me? I’m your Mistress, and you would be well to remember that.”

He instantly looked contrite, and shifted back two steps, letting his hand drop to his side as his chin touched his chest. “I’m sorry, Mistress. It will not happen again.”

“See that it doesn’t.” I growled over my shoulder as I headed toward the conference room.

Lorna and Lainey both glanced at me quickly but averted their eyes. It wasn’t often that I jumped down someone’s throat, but I was coiled tightly right now. Over the last ten years, the people who worked for me had become more than employees, they had become friends. Maybe it was time to put some distance between us and remind them all who I was and what I was capable of.

I stepped into the conference room, two of the virtual video monitors were up and cued for me as the elders sat around the table along with Rex, Garrett and a few others.

I scanned the room, and then sat back in my chair. The next course of business was going to be dealing with Portage. “Show me.”

Chapter 21 – Hugh

Ilet myself into myapartment and sank to the couch. My mind was in a tailspin and I was fighting to keep it from crashing. How could all of this be possible? The strange thing was that it made sense in a really sick kind of way.

A dream that I’d had many times over the years filled my mind. I was on an old fishing boat, which had never made sense because I’d never gone fishing in my life. The waves had been rough and were splashing over the side. Something broke, a large pole of some kind that had heavy ropes attached to it. One of the ropes sailed through the air toward me, a large hook on the end of it. The knot on the rope had knocked me back as a wave had me off balance, and the hook had dug through my side as if I were soft butter. I had screamed, and the hook yanked back as the pole that the rope was attached jerked the other way. The hook had ripped me practically in half. My body falling back against the side behind me, as another wave tossed the boat and I went right over into the water.

I rubbed my hands down my face. Was it possible that dream was how my great-grandfather had died? If what they said was correct, then that could possibly be a memory from my soul and not a dream at all. My great-grandfather hadn’t been put to rest at sea, he had been lost at sea.

This was ridiculous. Was I really believing this crap?

I went into my bathroom, striped down and got into the shower, and my phone began to ring, “Speaker.” I said without even thinking. “Hello?”

“Hugh?”

“Yeah, Tom. Why are you calling me so late?”

“Because I just got word that some of Portage’s people showed up in Philadelphia. They were causing a scene down at that club that the Mistress had been seen in.”

“When was this?”
