“I’m going out to the club. I need to see what they want, and I can’t do that sitting on my ass in here.”

“Is that wise?”

She shrugged, “I don’t care. Look,” She turned to me, “I started going out so that I would get a response from Portage, I got one. It’s my turn to respond. This is what I wanted.”

“But what are you going to do?”

“See what he wants.”

“He wants to kill you.”

“I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure he wants to control me, and if he can’t do that, thenhe will want me dead. I’m not going to let him have either of those wishes.”

The elevator door opened, “Get changed, you’re coming, too.”

“Oh, goodie!” I squealed with false delight. As I went into my apartment, I brought up Hugh’s number and called him. I know she said to tell him thank you, but this might be a good way for him to see what she could do, and what was in store for him when he transitioned. I had no doubt that he would.

As we all gathered in the lobby to leave, I guarded my thoughts. I knew that she would be pissed that I had told him about it, but I knew what I was doing. At least, I thought I knew what I was doing. I really believed that if he transitioned and mated with her, it would be good for all of us—especially her.

When we arrived, I searched the air as soon as I got out of the transport and found him lurking in the shadows of an alley. Did he really think that he could hide there, and we wouldn’t know? He had so much to learn.

I knew she would be pissed, but damn if I didn’t feel her anger flash through me like a wildfire as I admitted that I had told him to come.

She argued with me and Hugh for a moment, but I knew that he had won her over eventually. He would never know what his comment of blue blood had done. Once upon a time, she had said that her blood was blue because of her need to help others. She had been devoted to her job, loved helping the humans in times of need.

I studied Hugh, was that why he had gotten into law enforcement, too? Did his blood run blue?

“Kristin, let him stay, give him your blood. You can protect him then, and if for some reason they get him, you’ll be able to find him through the bond.”

“What if it kills him?”

“Then blame it on Portage and move on.”I replied quickly and felt a little uneasy.

She inhaled slowly and released it, “I’ll let you stay, but you have to do something for me.”

Oh, please do not let her blood cripple him, or worse yet, kill him. What a scene that would cause out here if it did.

I felt his unease, his body warring with itself as her blood bubbled to the surface. He wanted to take it, but he was afraid. I felt her compulsion reach out to him in her one word and he took her wrist and sucked from the bite mark she had left on herself.

My body tensed as I waited to see what would happen. Would he fall to his knees and start holding his throat as the blood burned through his esophagus? I wasn’t the only one tense, she was too.

Hugh swallowed a few times, and he rolled his shoulders back as if he were making himself stand up taller. Halleluiah! It hadn’t killed him. Holy crap—it didn’t kill him!

“I told you!”I sang into her head.

“You’re lucky,”She seethed back.

“Oh, I believe he is the lucky one.”I replied happily.

“Watch him,” She said to me as she spun and returned to our group. Oh, shit, I had forgotten about them.

“How do you feel?” I asked him as she left us.

“Not bad, I think.”

Well, he sure looked good—too good. As I took his arm, my eyes scanned over the group.

“Why isn’t he dead?”Josh growled into my head.
