“Why?”
“Women transition different than men. We all go through the transition normally in our thirties. Once a female bonds to a male, our transition starts, but it is not completed until we become pregnant.”
“Wait, you all have to get pregnant to transition?”
I nodded, “Yes, I was mated to Alex for a while after I first learned of what I was, but I wasn’t ready to give up my life as a cop. Alex wanted me to quit and join him official as his mate and help him with overseeing the breed.”
“But isn’t Rex your first child? I thought he was Trent’s son.”
“He is. Alex was kidnapped, Trent and a few others came to protect me, and Trent broke the bond that I had with Alex to spare me the feelings of his torture. As a mated couple, you can feel anything the other feels if they are not protecting themselves mentally. Unfortunately, when Trent broke the bond, we accidentally mated.”
Hugh laughed, “How do you accidentally mate?”
“They drugged me, because they knew I would fight it. No one thought about the fact that when Trent took my blood to break the bond, that it would also drug him, and one thing led to another.”
“How exactly do you mate?”
“Share blood while you are having sex. It’s the exchange of all body fluids at once that brings the connection to a head. Right now, you are bound to me and that is because we shared blood, but we aren’t mated.”
He studied me, “Do you want to mate with me?”
“To be honest, I do not want to mate with anyone, Hugh, but if the choice was you or another elder, I would choose you. I enjoy your company, and it is quite obvious that our desire is strong for one another.”
“Does the fact that I am a reborn play into your decision?”
“Very much so. I believe that you hold a very intense power, that will only make me stronger. I believe in the days ahead I will need all the strength that I can obtain. Would it be using you? Maybe, but I do like you.”
“I appreciate the fact that you are so forthright with your thoughts. No beating around the bush.”
“I never have been one for coy games. If you do decide to transition, I will not force you to mate with me. I would accept your decision if you chose not to, but I would require you to remain bonded with me and to remain at my side while we fight this war.”
“Does Portage really want to control the humans?”
“Yes. He see’s humans as vessels to feed from and nothing else. They are toys for enjoyment. There are a lot of people that feel that same way. Some are afraid to admit it, but there are many that would side with him if the tide turned and he started rising to the top.” I paused as I glanced around my apartment. “I have to thank you for reminding me of something.”
“What is that?”
“You reminded me that once upon a time, I believed my blood ran only blue. Over the years since I have been in this position, I have forgotten what it was like to live as a human. I forgot the oath that I took all those years ago to protect them, to protect all those that were in need of such. I do not want to see humans hurt, and if we go to war, many of them will be killed.”
Hugh watched me carefully for a few minutes, as if he were mulling over my words, and then he smiled. “I’m glad to hear that, Kristin. I really am.” He shifted so that he was turned slightly toward me, “I have a proposition for you.”
“Alright.”
“If I were to transition, and I decided to mate with you. Would you allow me to leave your side once the war was over if things were not going well between us? I mean, I get why you want me to mate with you, for the power, but what if we find that we don’t have anything else between us besides great sex?”
I chuckled, “Hugh, once things have calmed down, I would release you. In fact, I would release you before that as long as you took an oath to stay at my side, no matter what.”
“Would you also allow me to become a liaison between your society and the human world? I think since I have lived in that world for so long, I might be able to help the two work together.”
I cocked my head to the side, wondering if there was an ulterior motive for his request. He did have insight into their world, just as I had. “I would consider it. You would have to prove yourself to me first.”
“How?”
“By showing me that I could trust you. If you transition, your world will change, you will join our world, and our world is full of secrets and abilities. I know that you came to me when this all started and wanted to know our abilities, and who our people are. I can’t have you sharing all that information with the government, it would be dangerous for everyone involved.”
“Why?”
“Hugh, can you honestly tell me that your task force, or government, doesn’t want to use some of our society members as weapons?”
