“No, I cannot tell you that. They do.”

“And we can’t allow them to have that knowledge. If they knew what I was capable of, what would they do to try and force me to use it for their own reasons? That is not my purpose. My purpose is to use it for our breed, to protect our society, and the humans that interact with us.”

“I understand that, Kristin.” He stared at his drink for a minute, “I would respect your wishes. I would work with you to determine what they should be told and what they shouldn’t be.”

“Well, I might have you work with my son Garrett. He will be the next one in line to take over, should the day come that I cannot.”

“Garrett? What about Rex?”

I laughed, “Rex is not always rational, and can be rather impulsive at times. He is a lot like his father.”

Hugh chuckled, “What would they say to me mating with you?”

I shrugged, “I don’t know, and I don’t care. They have no voice in the matter.”

“Does anyone else know about me?”

I shook my head, “No, my sentinels have kept their mouths shut. We were waiting for you to decide.” I reached out to him, feeling inside his body, “And not that I want to add pressure to you, but your decision must come soon. Your time is coming near its end, I can feel it within you.”

“You can?”

“Yes.”

He blinked a few times as he glanced around, “I don’t want to die, Kristin.”

“I believe you.”

“Would it be odd to admit that I’m scared?”

“Not at all. I believe that fear is a very powerful motivator. As long as you don’t allow it to consume you.”

“I’m not sure I’ve ever been afraid before, not like this.”

I reached for his hand, “There is nothing to fear, Hugh. We are not going to hurt you, and you could use your experience to help both societies.”

I saw the wheels literally turning in his mind, saw the decision fill his eyes, “Okay, then I’ll do it. I’ll transition, and—”

I put my hand up, “One decision at a time. Let’s get you through the transition, and then you and I can talk about the future.”

“What if I already know the answer?”

“Okay, then what is it?”

“I’ll transition and I’ll mate with you. If we are going to spare the human society from pain, I want you to be as strong as you can be. I am taking you for your word, and for your previous oath that you are going to do everything you can to protect the humans. If having a deeper connection with me will help, then you can have everything that you want.”

I stared at him, measuring his words with his actions and the temperament of his body. The words he spoke, he meant, but something within warred slightly with it. Not enough to cause hesitation, but enough that I could sense it. Was that only fear of the unknown?

“Thank you, Hugh.” I squeezed his hand.

He set his glass down and cupped the side of my face, “No, thank you, Kristin. Thank you for allowing me the privilege and honor of being by your side.”

“The honor is all mine.” I told him before his lips brushed over mine.
