Chapter Five

Lexi

Iwatched him walk away, my eyes stuck on the way his jeans moved around his hips and over his butt. Would he look back? No, he hit the stairs and didn’t stop.

I frowned as I locked the door behind me and hung up my jacket by the door. Why did that bother me? What should have bothered me was him suggesting that I think of him tonight if I brought out the rabbit. The rabbit—

I headed toward my bedroom and paused at the door. In the middle of my floor was the box I’d discarded when Connie was here. I stared at it for a long time, my focus coming and going with the waves of alcohol in my system. I picked up the rabbit and stared at it. It wasn’t like I’d never used one before, I had.

Sighing, I put it back in the box and moved the box to the top of my dresser before going into the bathroom and getting ready for bed. As I brushed my teeth, Alex’s image came to mind. The memory of his chest against mine, his hand around my back, made my core clench. It had been too long since I’d been with someone, and while I personally had not wanted Alex, my body sure as hell had. I wasn’t sure if that should be a plus or minus.

I peeled back my sheets, and before I got in, stared at the box again. Clare was probably right, and maybe I was filled with sexual tension. Why the hell not. I retrieved the bright-pink object and took it into the bathroom to wash it with antibacterial soap. After I was done, I dried and set it on the bedside table, climbing in and then laying there staring at the thing.

No, I didn’t need to get off using a battery-powered object. Instead, with Alex’s image back in my mind, I slipped my hand under my panties and found myself slick. Oh, god—

A fantasy of Alex pressing his lips to mine, and then running them down my neck as his strong arms held me tightly to him ripped through me, but it wasn’t enough. I needed more. With a groan, I grabbed the rabbit and pushed down my panties, trying to find the power button in the dark. The little orange light came on after a moment of fiddling, and it made a whirling noise, but that wasn’t what I wanted and turned that function back off. Finally, I found the buttons to adjust the vibrations and set it on low, bringing it to my sensitive skin and immediately feeling the build of an orgasm.

Alex’s voice was in my head, and if you and the rabbit have fun tonight, think of me.I shifted the head of the vibrator to my opening and pushed up, imagining that it was him entering me. The little vibrating ears hit the right spot, and I orgasmed within moments. The feeling so damn powerful that my toes literally curled. I hit the button, hoping to turn it off, but hit the higher speed, and arched back on the bed as another powerful orgasm ripped through me. “Oh, my god—oh, my god!” I called out over and over again until I had to yank the thing away or risk dying from another release.

It took me a moment to get it turned off and catch my breath. Once I knew my legs would hold me, I took it back to the bathroom and rewashed it, staring at it as a little smile brushed my lips. “Maybe you’re not so bad after all.”

After tucking it into my nightstand, I pulled the covers over my shoulders and drifted off to sleep like a well-fed baby.

The next morningwhen I woke, I had a slight headache, but strangely enough, the rest of my body felt great. In fact, the knot of tension that had been sitting at the base of my spine seemed to have all but disappeared. I guess Clare had been right after all. I’d just needed a few intense orgasms to unwind myself.

With a smile, I got up and made coffee before getting ready for work. I checked my phone and found a message from Clare saying that she had made it home safely. Oh, lousy friend moment for not even thinking of her until now. Well, that’s not true, I had thought of her briefly last night as I drifted off and wondered if I should thank her for the gift—or not. Maybe I should just let her think that I hadn’t used it. It wasn’t like I was going to use the other thing she sent me. Um, that was a no.

When I got ready to leave, I was stepping out of my apartment and found a note and two carrots hanging from the doorknob. That prick. I ripped the note off.In case your rabbit is hungry.

I found myself actually chuckling and went back into the apartment and to the kitchen. I took out a knife and chopped off most of the two carrots and then bit off the ends to make them look gnawed on. Then I grabbed a pen and added something to his note. I stared at my handiwork and grinned as I let myself back out of my apartment.

My stomach quivered with nerves as I went down the stairs and hoped I wouldn’t see him. The coast was clear, and I slipped down the hall toward 106. My ears were perked for any sound that might alert me to a door opening or someone approaching, and I quickly taped the note and what was left of the carrots to his door before I hustled away, my heart beating in my throat. It had been a long time since I’d been bold like that, but hey, why not. If he wanted to play games, fine, let’s play some games.

I rushed out to the street and was heading down the sidewalk when I spotted someone off in the distance jogging, heading this way. My heart jumped, and I quickly slid between two cars and hunched over so I wouldn’t be seen. A few moments later, Alex ran past, and I sucked in the brief view of him before hustling out the other side of the cars and on to work.

Maybe that was childish to hide from him. I chided myself as I strolled along. I was almost thirty-three. It wasn’t like I’d slept with him, and I was embarrassed about it, no, I’d only used his image to get myself off last night. I winced at how bad that sounded. My phone vibrated, and I pulled it out to see a message from Clare.

How did it go last night? Did you get lucky?

I shook my head as I wrote her back. You do know that I’m capable of getting myself home. I didn’t need an escort.

I was hoping your escort would do more than escort you. I was hoping he’d give you a free ride too.

Sorry to disappoint you.

You are totally no fun. I’m heading into class; I’ll talk to you later.

I said goodbye, and then as I let myself into the building where I worked, I put aside thoughts of Clare and Alex as I prepared myself for the day.

Three hours later, I was in my office when my boss, Ralph, joined me. “Hey, the meeting has been moved up. We were supposed to meet with the company on Thursday, but it’s going to happen today to confirm the details. I’d like you to be there so we can finalize numbers for the program.”

“Sure, just let me know what time.”

“Right after lunch we’ll meet in the conference room.”

“Sounds good,” I told him as my mind began to switch from the current client file that I was working on to the new one. “I have almost everything ready for it, so I’ll have lunch delivered here, and I should have it done by the time the meeting is ready.”
