I laughed to cover up my disappointment. “Of course,” I said with a fake smile plastered to my lips.

She excused herself a moment later, and I wandered into the sanctuary and stared at the two sides. I guess I was supposed to sit on the groom’s side since I was here with Trevor. I went about halfway down and slid into a pew.

As the church began to fill, I found myself looking forward to the service. I loved weddings, although I hadn’t been to many. That’s what happened when you didn’t have many friends or the ones that you now had were already married. At thirty-two, most of the people my age were well into their marriages or starting second ones.

The music changed, and the men came out a side door and lined up near the front. I had to give it to Alex; he didn’t look at all nervous. I wondered if Lexi appeared as calm. My gaze shifted and landed on Trevor. He really was beautiful, and the sight of him sucked the air from my lungs.

He was searching the rows, and when his gaze landed on mine, a smile spread slowly over his lips. We stared at each other for a long moment, and I swear I saw things that weren’t there. I felt like he was trying to tell me something as he continued to lock eyes with me, but I couldn’t fathom what the message could be.

Before I could even come up with an idea, the music changed again, and the back doors opened as the ceremony officially began. I watched with avid interest as the bridesmaids entered and then stood as Lexi came into view.

She was radiant as she glided down the aisle. Her eyes were bright, her smile strong and sure. There were no doubts in her eyes, no hesitation or wonder if this was the right thing. She knew, and I turned to glance at Alex; he looked bowled over. I frowned; he looked almost like Trevor had when I’d opened the door. Sort of speechless.

I shifted to look at Trevor; he was watching me. Had Trevor been more impressed by how I looked than he let on? He winked at me and turned his attention to Lexi as she reached the front.

I barely heard the words at the start as I was stuck in my own head, wondering if I had been wrong. Had Trevor just been shocked at the sight of me? Unable to come up with words? He didn’t seem like that type of man, but as he shifted and looked at me again, I saw the heat in his eyes. Heat meant for me and I shivered slightly.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Trevor

Istood at her door, unable to form words. Time seemed to slow down and with it, my heartbeat. She looked utterly amazing, and that dress—holy shit—that dress looked incredible on her, her waistline accentuated, her bust almost exploding from the plunging neckline. Even the shoes on her dainty feet were beautiful.

“You look very pretty.” The words slipped off my dry tongue, and I knew I should have given her a better compliment, but I couldn’t form any other complete thought. The memory of seeing her naked profile earlier today, the way her body screamed at me to take it now, had my dick begging to explode from my pants.

Holy—fuck—

I couldn’t seem to think straight as she walked beside me. My hands ached to run over her body, to peel back that gorgeous dress and make her mine. How the hell was I going to get through today with her looking like that?

My pants were tight as I climbed into the truck, but I don’t think she noticed. In fact, she seemed a little indifferent at first. While I drove, we talked about my new house, and slowly the blood flow in my crotch returned to normal.

At the church, with her small hand tucked into my arm, I felt like I was flying on a cloud. I loved that she was here with me, was thrilled that she was right beside me.

I wanted to kick myself when Alex complimented her much better than I did, and when Jake practically eye fucked her, I wanted to punch him in the face. Instead, I pulled her to me, glaring at him as if staking a claim. A claim that I didn’t have any right to make, but that I knew I wanted to do.

When it was time to leave her side, that was the last thing I wanted to do. I didn’t want anyone else near her. I wanted to keep her right at my side until I could remove her dress and show her how I felt about her. That’s why after I’d kissed her cheek, I’d whispered later. I had meant to keep that to myself but realized I’d spoken it out loud when she looked at me curiously.

We were in the back room, having a toast to Alex when he smirked at me. “You going to be next?”

“Excuse me?”

“Oh, come on, please tell me you aren’t tapping that.” Jake laughed. “Because if you aren’t, I will.”

I glared at him and almost stepped forward to punch him in the face, but Alex grabbed my arm. “Whoa!”

“Say something like that again, Screamer, and I will kick your ass.”

Jake laughed. “Well, I guess that answers my question.” He slapped me on the back. “She’s a beautiful woman.”

“Yeah, she is,” Alex agreed. He was watching me carefully, and I nodded. “So, are you going to be next?”

I laughed. “Hey, let’s not get us married off yet. We are still getting to know one another.”

“Well, at least that’s not a no.” Alex laughed. “You two look really good together.”

“Thanks,” I replied and guzzled a glass of the scotch that Jake had brought for the occasion.

We changed topics and killed time until it was ready to get the show on the road. “You nervous?” I asked Alex as we prepared to go out.
