I found myself frowning. “Trevor, can I ask you a serious question?”

“Yes.”

“Why are we here?”

“Why are we here? Um, I thought it was so we could have sex.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, of course, for sex. I mean, why are we really here? Is this all it’s going to be, a weekend of romance? Did you just get caught up in the moment with the wedding and all? On Monday, will you be on to something else?”

He pulled my face closer to his. “You are so much more than a weekend of romance, Davina. You’re a lifetime.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

Trevor

She stared at me, her eyes flicking back and forth between mine, her lips parted in surprise. “What are you saying?”

What was I saying? Was I trying to admit to her that I was falling in love with her? That while we’d made love, she’d cracked open that last part of me that no one had ever had access to and now it lay wide open for her? Was I ready to even admit that to myself?

“I’m saying that this is more than a weekend, Davina.” Okay, I could admit that much, because I did mean that.

“It is?”

“Yeah, it is. Is that too hard to believe?”

She frowned. “Maybe.”

I laughed softly. “Why do you say that?”

She gave me a droll look. “Because you yourself admitted that you don’t get involved with people. That you go on a few dates, spend a weekend with them, and then move on.”

“Yes, I did say that.”

“What has changed? You’re still going to be traveling, so why would you suddenly want to be involved with someone?”

I sighed. “I have Devon now, Davina. Things are different.”

She popped up on her elbow. “Do you want to be with me so I can move into your house and take care of your son? Is that what this is?”

For a moment, I didn’t move. I was surprised that she would think so low of me. When I didn’t reply right away, she quickly twirled to the side of the bed and stood. I tried to grab her, but she was too far away. “Davina, that’s not what this is about.”

She glared back at me. “Oh, really? Do you want to know what I think? I think that you wanted to woo me into your bed and then try to get me to move into your house so that I could watch Devon. Then while I was living in the in-law suite, you’d tell me that things wouldn’t work out with us, and you’d go back to your old ways.”

“Davina—”

She held her hand up. “Then I’d be there taking care of my best friend’s child, while you ran around having your romantic weekends.”

I pursed my lips, frustrated with how quickly this all went to shit after one of the best nights of my life. “That is not even close.”

“Bullshit!” she hissed toward me and spun, disappearing into the bathroom.

I flopped back down on the bed. Jesus, I was trying to tell the woman that I wanted a future with her. I didn’t want to go back to my old ways. My life was different, and I wanted Devon and her in my life. Did I want to stop traveling? No, but that didn’t mean that for the first time in my life, I didn’t want someone home waiting for me to arrive.

I found a tissue on the side of the bed and discarded the condom before pulling on my boxers. The longer I waited, the more antsy I became. I was tempted to barge into the bathroom, but I didn’t think that would go over very well. Instead, I began to collect my clothing, laying the items in a pile on the bed.

I had just retrieved my last item when the bathroom door opened, and she stood there in a robe. Her hair was not quite its typical mess, but still on the wild side after our time in bed.

“Good, you’re getting dressed. I think you should go,” she said as she crossed her arms over her chest.
