I picked up the coffee mug that I had yet to fill and threw it at him. “Get out of my house! You have no clue what he is like or why he invited me. Go away, Roman! I’m so done with your bullshit.”

“Roxy—”

I pointed at the door. “Get out! I’m not kidding, and do not come back!”

“Come on, Roxy, you need my help.”

“I don’t need anything from you,” I hissed at him. “Go the hell away, Roman.”

“Yeah, whatever.” He turned and walked out of the room, slamming the front door so hard the windows of my townhouse rattled.

“Jerk,” I muttered as I stared at the empty hallway. Tears came to my eyes as I glanced to the floor where my favorite mug lay in pieces all over the floor.

I grabbed the broom and began to sweep up the shards of ceramic. There was no way I was going to bend down and get them into the dustpan, but at least they were in a neat pile. I returned to finally make my coffee and hobbled back to the couch, grabbing the remote to get lost in a movie.

The problem was, my mind was stuck on what Roman had said. What did he have against Lee? It didn’t appear that he had just cause for the way he felt, but why would Roman act the way he was for no reason? It didn’t make sense, but then again, we were talking about my brother. Not much about him made sense these days.

I forced thoughts of Roman out of my mind and tried to get lost in the romance movie I was watching when my phone beeped with a text. I grinned to myself as I read the message from Lee.Are you awake?

I am.

Can I stop by? I want to drop something off.

Sure, I’ll unlock the door. Just come in.

I got off the couch slowly, hitting the powder room on my way down the hallway. I flipped the light on and wanted to immediately turn it back off. My god, I looked like hell. I should have consulted the mirror before I told him he could stop by. I bent down and sniffed at my armpit, gag! My hair was limp and knotted, and my face was grossly discolored.

I washed my hands, pulled my hair back from my face into a ponytail, and realized that just made my discolored face stand out more. So I brushed my hair quickly with my fingers, trying to tame it the best that I could. Ugh. I flipped the light off and headed down the hall to the door.

After unlocking it, I shuffled back to the couch and was just getting under the blanket when I heard a knock at the door, and then it opened. “Roxanne, it’s Henley.”

“Come in,” I called and then pulled the blanket up over my head, covering my face so only my eyes could be seen. A few moments later, he sauntered down the hall and paused when he saw me.

“You cold?” he asked with a raised brow and a smirk.

“No.”

“Then why are you dressed like an Eskimo?”

“I’m hiding.”

He chuckled. “From what?”

“You,” I said.

He laughed for a moment, then sobered as if suddenly concerned. “Why are you hiding from me?”

“Because I look terrible and really need a shower.”

His shoulders relaxed, and he came closer. “Roxy, don’t worry. I’ve seen you covered in blood. Bruises don’t bother me. As long as they are recovering bruises and not new ones.”

I began to lower the blanket from my face. “I really need a shower.”

“Well, why don’t you take one. It will probably make you feel a lot better.” He handed me a bag. “I brought you some breakfast.”

I stared at the bag. “You did?”

“Yeah, my partner and I stopped for breakfast after a run this morning, and I grabbed you two muffins and a fruit cup. I hope that’s okay.”
