I shifted to the edge of the couch slowly, getting to my feet. The anger now flowing through me held off the pain of moving. “How dare you come in here and talk like that about him. He was nothing but a gentleman. He brought food over, cooked, fed me, and then he even cleaned the kitchen when I fell back asleep.”

“You were sleeping while he was here?” He narrowed his eyes at me. “How do you know he didn’t try something while you were sleeping?”

“You are disgusting, Roman. What the hell do you have against him?”

“Nothing.” He sneered.

“Then what is your problem, Roman?” I slammed my fists on my hips. “You called him a dog last night, and for the record, he heard that. Why don’t you like him?”

“I just don’t. He’s a fire wacker, Rox.”

My jaw dropped. I had heard the term many times over the years, but it did not appear to fit this situation. “If I’m not mistaken, Roman, he’s a paramedic, not a firefighter.”

He crossed his arms over his chest. “Same difference. He works with them.”

“So do you.”

“No, I don’t.” He growled. “Firefighters are wannabes.”

“Yeah, well, guess what, Roman. Lee, who is a paramedic, not a firefighter, is a very nice man. He helped me when I had my accident. He checked on me after my injury; he brought me food so that I would have some for the next few days, and he cleaned my kitchen. That sure doesn’t sound like a bad person to me.”

“You have no idea who he is, Rox.”

“Obviously, you don’t either,” I snapped as I hobbled into the kitchen to make some coffee.

“You should steer clear of him, Rox.”

“Give me one good reason,” I said over my shoulder.

“I told you, he’s a dog.”

I rolled my eyes. “Why do you say that, Roman? Does he sleep with a lot of women? Does he treat them bad? Does he lie, cheat, steal?”

“I don’t know,” he muttered. “But I’m sure he does a lot of that.”

I turned to him, slightly surprised that he had just admitted that he had no real reason to feel the way he did. “What do you mean, you don’t know? You are calling him a dog, and you have no evidence to prove that he is? That’s really shitty, Roman. Even for you.”

“Look, Roxy, I just don’t think he’s the right kind of guy for you.”

I turned back to my coffeemaker and went about putting my coffee pod inside and collected a mug. “Well, it’s a good thing that you know me so well. I mean, what would I possibly do without having my big brother watching over me? Gee, I wonder. Maybe, I might actually meet a nice guy who makes me happy.”

“Yeah, well, he’s not the guy.”

I spun around, instantly regretting it when pain lanced up my leg. “You know what, Roman? I don’t really care what you think. You do not have the right to interfere in my life anymore. I’m twenty-eight years old, and I am quite capable of taking care of myself.”

“No, you aren’t.”

I growled at him as I clenched my teeth. “Get out, Roman.”

“Roxanne, don’t be stupid. You aren’t going to see this guy again, are you?”

“As a matter of fact, I am. I’m going to meet his family this weekend.”

“His family?” His voice rose. “Why the hell would he introduce you to his family? Did you lie to me before? Have you been seeing this guy for a while?”

“Lie to you? You never asked if I knew him, but for your information, I just met him two days ago.”

He laughed. “You met a guy two days ago, and he says he wants to take you to meet his family. What a loser.”
