Before he could respond, I stepped out and closed the door behind me. I was still fuming mad, and it was better that I leave now. As I got in my truck, I hoped like hell I hadn’t made it worse for her.

The next morning,I woke up to find a text on my phone from her. It was short and sweet with an apology for her brother and told me she was doing alright. I wished that I could call her, but I had to get ready for work. I sent her a quick reply to thank her for letting me know she was okay, and that I’d be in touch later.

Brett and I had just cleared the hospital on a call when I got a text from her asking if I could talk. Anxiety began to fill me as I hit the dial button on her number. Did her brother talk her out of taking the job? Was she calling to say it was over?

“Hey, you,” she answered. “Sorry about last night.”

“That’s okay, are you alright?”

She sighed, the sound loud over the speaker. “I am. He was here for an hour, but I finally got him to understand that this is good for me.”

“You’re still taking the job?”

“Of course.” She laughed. “When I make a plan, I stick to it.”

“That’s good. I was worried that he would talk you out of it or threaten you in some way.”

“No, he didn’t. Well, he tried to, but he knows that doesn’t work on me.”

“Look, I’m sorry for what I said last night. I never should have brought up your mother.”

“It’s okay. Actually, I think you are right. Roman never has been good with relationships, and I think that is because he does feel abandoned by our mother.”

“But you don’t?”

“No. I understand why, remember?” She chuckled again. “And after seeing your family this weekend, I really understand why.”

I smiled for the first time all day. “I’m glad to hear that, Roxy.”

“Well, I have to go. I just wanted to let you know that all was good. I’m heading down to the car dealership soon to get a new car. Do you work all night?”

“I get off at seven.”

“Do you want to come over? I can cook dinner tonight.”

My heart instantly felt lighter. “I’d like that.”

We hung up a few moments later, and Brett chuckled. “Sounds like you had a better weekend than I thought you did. When you were quiet this morning, I was waiting for you to tell me things didn’t go so well.”

“No, they went great, actually.” I proceeded to tell him about our adventures, from her connecting with Wes and Charlotte, to getting hit by the truck, and then how the woman had called and offered her a job.

“That’s fantastic, well, not her getting hurt again, but.” He peered my way. “You know what I mean. And your family liked her?”

“Oh, yeah. They were all bowled over by her. In fact, she’s going to be staying with my parents for a week or two until she finds a place.”

His gaze snapped to mine. “Seriously? Just like that, she’s moving in with your parents.”

I chuckled. “Well, she’s going to be helping my mother with a Valentine’s party, and yes, my parents were crazy about her.”

“What about you? Are you crazy about her?”

“Yes, I am. I’m pretty sure I have found the one.” I frowned, and he must have noticed.

“If you found the right one, why do you look perplexed?”

“Because of her family. Roman and I do not get along, and I have made it known that I don’t appreciate the way he speaks to her. We were nose to nose last night, and I’m pretty sure if Roxy hadn’t gotten in between us, we would have gone to blows.”
