He sighed. “Better watch out with Novak; he’s a hothead.”

“Yeah, I know. I think that is the only drawback I have with this relationship.”

“Hopefully, you two will get it figured out.”

“I hope so.”

Before we could say any more, we were dispatched to another call, and it was one thing after another all day.

I was on the way out to my truck after shift when someone stepped out from behind it, and my steps faltered slightly when I saw it was Roman. I kept my head up, and my eyes glued to him as I stopped a few feet away.

“Novak.”

“Young.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you to stop fucking with my sister.”

“I’m not fucking with your sister. I happen to like her very much, Roman, and I know she likes me, too.”

“Yeah, but you put these stupid ideas into her head about moving away. She needs to stay here where I can watch out for her.”

“Why? Why does she need someone to watch out for her?” I laughed. “Do you even know your sister? She’s a strong woman with a very intense passion for her business and life. She knows how to take care of herself and make good decisions. You do not give her enough credit.”

“You have no idea what my sister is like. You barely know her.”

“I know her better than you think I do, Roman. I care about your sister, and I’m not going away unless she tells me she wants me to.”

I began to walk past him, and he grabbed my arm, jerking me to a stop. I glared at his hand and then at him. He removed his grasp before he spoke. “Don’t get too comfortable, Young. You’ll be out of Rox’s life before you know it. I’m going to make sure of that.”

He stalked away, and I stared at him. What the hell did he have against me? How far would he go to destroy what Roxy and I were building?

I waited until he had driven away before I climbed into my truck and headed back to my place to grab a change of clothes. I had every intention of staying the night with her if she asked. On my way, I wondered again what lengths he would go to. With a frown, I squeezed the steering wheel while I tried to figure out how to keep him from ruining the best thing I’d found in years.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Roxanne

“Ican’t believe you,” I hissed at my brother after the door was closed.

“Me? Did you not just hear what he said about our mother? The guy has some fucking nerve. Why did you even bother to tell him about her?”

“I told him because we are getting to know one another, and he asked about her.”

“She’s not worth talking about, Rox. As far as I’m concerned, she’s not even our mother. She’s dead.”

I spun on him as I walked into the kitchen, ignoring the flash of pain up my leg. “She isnotdead, Roman. I’m sorry that you feel like she abandoned you, but she wanted a better life than the one she had here.”

“How can you not hate her? I do.”

“Because she’s our mother, and I want her to be happy, just like I want you to be happy, too.”

He grew quiet for a few moments and leaned against the counter as I poured a glass of juice. “So, what’s with the job?”

“I’ll be working at the Millerstown Country Club as their event coordinator. It’s mostly weddings, but they do private parties and other events, too.”

“That’s a long drive; how are you going to do that in bad weather?”
