“Yeah.” I smiled widely, excited to see him. “I’m fine. I hurt a little and haven’t taken medication all afternoon. I meant to, but when I got back, I fell asleep. Woke up only a few minutes ago when someone knocked on my door.”

He didn’t say anything, so I stepped forward, putting my arms around his neck and smiling. “Did you have a rough day at work? You seem tense.”

“It was busy. I guess I’m just tired.” He wrapped his arms around my waist.

“Do you want to go home and sleep?” I asked, suddenly worried that he would choose that option.

He leaned forward, rubbing his nose over mine. “Are you kidding? I’ve been waiting all day to see you again.”

“Good, I’m glad to hear that, because I was going to be really disappointed if you left. Although I would have understood.”

He glanced down the hallway. “I guess since you were sleeping, you didn’t start cooking that dinner you invited me over to enjoy.”

I winced. “No, sorry. I was so tired after everything today that I sat down to relax and crashed.”

He chuckled. “That’s okay. I can whip us up something. What do you have?”

“Frozen pizza?”

He looked horrified as he stepped back. “You expect me to work all day and eat frozen pizza?” He held the serious face for all of three seconds, and then we both started laughing. “I’m kidding, Rox, frozen pizza would be fine. I don’t care what we eat; I just want to be here with you.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Henley

Ihad just turned onto Roxanne’s street when I saw her front door open and Susan step out. I quickly pulled my truck into the first empty spot and turned off the lights, hoping that Susan didn’t see my truck.

What the hell was she doing here? I know that Roxy said they were friends, but I also got the feeling that it was one of those keep-your-friends-close-and-your-enemies-closer kind of relationships.

Susan got in her car and left, and I took a second to calm my racing heart. I hadn’t seen her in a while, and I was okay with that. Had she heard that I was seeing Roxy and came over to talk to her? Were they really friends, and it was just a friendly visit to check on her? Had she heard that Roxy was moving?

I sat in my truck for a few minutes and mulled over the reason Susan was there. The conversation with my brother kept rattling around in my head, and I knew I needed to tell Roxanne about it.

I was tense as I knocked on the door. Luckily, Roxanne took it as me having a bad day and didn’t even mention Susan. As much as I knew I should talk to her about it, I didn’t want to spoil the good mood that Roxanne was in.

With dinner decided, I watched her move around her kitchen as she got the pizza ready to go into the oven. While she worked, she told me about her day, explained what she had accomplished in the way of getting ready to move, and then every detail about her new car.

I was happy to listen and enjoyed the animation in her voice and on her features as she talked. By the time we’d eaten, I’d forgotten all about Susan. Tonight was not the night to bring up the past—it was about the future.

After we polished off the pizza, I set the dishes in the sink, and Roxy coaxed me over to the couch. We curled up together and watched a movie, and while I didn’t care about the film, I loved every minute of my time with her. She yawned widely, her jaw cracking.

“I think someone needs to get to bed.” I was feeling a little disappointed that I might not get to stay the night with her, but all that changed when she turned bright eyes my way.

“You are going to join me, right? I need to make up for last night.”

“We don’t have to if you’re too tired, Roxy.”

She sat up and stared at me. “Are you kidding? I’ve been waiting all day for this.” She climbed off the couch, grabbing my hand and tugging. “Let’s go, my room now.”

I followed her down the hall where she paused and put the deadbolt and chain on her door, and then led me up to her room. “You know, I had every intention of wearing something sexy tonight to seduce you.”

“Yeah, why didn’t you?” I asked huskily as she turned and put her body against mine.

She frowned. “I had a visitor, and she threw my plans off.”

I forced myself not to tense and knew that I needed to tell her, but before I could, she slipped her hands under my shirt. “But I don’t want to talk about that. In fact,” she stepped up on her toes and kissed me softly, “I don’t want to talk at all.”

I pulled her to me, losing myself in only her. There would be enough time to talk later. Right now, I wanted to love her. Slowly, we peeled the clothes from one another and lay down on the bed. I took a moment to treasure the view of her body, and I loved that she wasn’t shy in front of me. She didn’t seem the least bit uncomfortable with my fascination of her body as I nipped, kissed, and licked everywhere I could reach.
