“You left already? You didn’t even say goodbye to Dad or me.”

“Roman, you knew that I was leaving today.”

“Yeah, but I figured you would have at least said goodbye.”

I laughed to ease my frustration. “Roman, I’m two hours away, not two thousand miles. I’ll be back soon, and you know you can visit me here.”

“What about Dad? You didn’t even bother to tell him you were moving. I had to tell him.”

“I’m sure he will live.”

“You know, you are more and more like her every day.”

“I assume you mean our mother.”

“Yes, you know she just up and left without saying goodbye to anyone.”

“She did not, Roman. She said goodbye to us. I remember it clearly.”

“That’s some made-up dream you concocted in your head. She said she was going away for a little while. She never said she was leaving for good.”

“Well, maybe you didn’t understand what she meant. I knew she wasn’t coming back.” I sighed. “What’s the point of this conversation?”

“I just can’t believe you left without saying goodbye.”

“Jeez, Roman, get over yourself, alright? It’s no big deal. I’ll let you know when I’m coming back to town, and we can meet for lunch. I’ll even invite Dad if that makes you feel better.”

He was quiet for a moment. “Fine. Is the dog there with you?”

“Roman,” I hissed. “If you call him that one more time, I’m going to stop answering my phone.”

“Whatever, is he there?”

“Of course he is. He is helping me get settled at his parents’ house.”

“Let me talk to him.”

“No,” I snapped.

He growled. “Put him on the damn phone, Roxy.”

“Why the hell should I? So you can threaten him? Grow up, Roman, and stop acting so damn childish.”

“Who is being childish? I wanted to give him my phone number in case something happens to you and you need help.”

“Oh.”

“So, you going to put him on the phone now?”

“Fine, hold on,” I muttered as I returned to the kitchen. I handed the phone to Lee. “Roman wants to talk to you about something.”

He cocked a brow but took the phone, not making any moves to leave the room. “Roman.”

I could hear a husky mumble but had no idea what he was saying as I retook my seat. Lee nodded as he listened and then recited his phone number to him.

He listened for another moment and peered at me quickly before looking away and speaking. “Roxy will be fine.” There was more talking on the other line, and then Lee snapped, “I told you she will be fine. Goodbye, Roman.”

He handed the phone back to me, and I put it to my ear as Roman was going on about how he would kick Lee’s ass if something happened to me. I rolled my eyes.
