She smiled widely. “I’m glad, Lee. You’re a good man; you deserve a good woman, and Rox is a great one.”

“If you think that, why did you steal all her clients?”

She looked contrite for a moment. “Because I’m not a good person. I never meant to hurt her.”

I nodded, not having a response to vocalize that was appropriate, and we went into the building behind another couple. Inside, the music was playing loudly, and people were milling around talking while the dance floor was full of couples getting their groove on. I scanned the area and saw my parents talking with another couple. My perusal continued and landed on Hunt who made eye contact and pointed to the side.

My heart slammed against my chest wall as I stared at her. She was even more beautiful than I remembered, and I could not wait to hold her in my arms again. She was looking around the room, and her eyes fell on me, then shot to her brother and Susan. She stumbled back slightly, and I took a step forward.

“Wait here.”

I made a beeline for her, and she seemed frozen in place. I stopped a foot away from her just as the music changed to a slow song. I couldn’t have planned it better. “Can I have this dance?”

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I’ll explain, but you need to dance with me, Roxy.”

Her gaze went over my shoulder, and I assumed it hit her brother’s before it came back to me, and she took my hand.

Chapter Thirty-One

Roxanne

The sight of Lee in front of me had my knees weak. I wanted to fall into his arms, but I held back. What was he doing here, and why in God’s name would he think that bringing my brother and Susan here would be a good idea?

I glanced at my brother, and he made a motion for me to go with Lee. What was going on? My curiosity got the better of me, and I let Lee walk me to the dance floor.

When Lee put his hand on my lower back and pulled me close to him, my body began to shake. I wanted to wrap myself around this man and never let him go. How could I feel that way when I knew he had lied to me?

“The party is very nice, Roxanne.”

I stared into his face. “You came all this way to tell me that?”

“No.”

“I thought you were working tonight,” I stated as I shifted my gaze away.

“I’m between jobs.”

My feet stilled for a moment as my gaze locked back on his. “What do you mean?”

His eyes flicked to the side and then back. “Do you remember the night you and I talked about our pasts, and you said you didn’t want to know?”

“Yes.”

“Well, Susan was my past. We dated for about five months. She was one of the reasons I moved to Plattsville, but shortly after I moved, we broke up. I liked it there, so I stayed.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I have not been involved with Susan for over two years. Those pictures were not what they looked like. Susan was a patient. She had passed out, and I just so happened to be on duty when the call came in.”

I frowned. Why would my brother lie to me? Lee put his knuckle under my chin and lifted it so that we were staring at one another again. “Before you moved, your brother threatened to tear our relationship apart. He made it well known that he did not approve. I did not, however, give a shit.”

I laughed for a brief moment, and then he continued. “I was checking Susan’s eyes in the first picture because she had struck her head. In the second picture, Susan was trying to stand, and she was unsteady on her feet. Your brother was there, and he took the pictures. He thought that maybe that would break us up.”

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he’s a controlling asshole.”
