“Look, I hope that she figures things out, but I’m not sure I can tell you anything that might help you. I gotta go; tell everyone I said hello, and I’ll see you when I come home.”

“Will you try to talk to her when you do?”

I frowned. “I don’t know. I’m being honest here, Lee.” I let my eyes drift up Sam’s bare legs. She was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and she looked pretty damn sexy in them. “I gotta move on with my life, man.”

“What, with that woman you met there? Sam, was it?”

“Maybe,” I commented, and my eyes latched on to hers. “I gotta go, Henley.”

I hung up before I could hear what else he was going to say and stood, tossing my phone to the desk. “Is that beer for me?”

“Unless you want me to drink alone,” she said and stepped into my room, holding the bottle out to me. I approached her, taking the bottle.

“I don’t want to drink alone,” I replied softly and reached past her to push the door closed.

“Neither do I,” she commented and laid her other hand on my chest.

I set my beer off to the side and took hold of her face, pulling her lips to mine and kissing her slowly. When I pulled back, I stared down at her.

“Are you alright with this only being what it is here?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, no promises or commitments. I have a life in New York. You have what sounds like a complicated one in Pennsylvania. How about we just enjoy what we have here, and when we leave, we kiss goodbye and go our separate ways.”

I grinned. “As long as you are okay with that. I know I’m not in a place to give anyone anything else.”

“Oh, yeah, I’m sure. It sounds like you have someone you are trying to get over, and well, I’m still kind of stuck on my ex-husband, so you don’t have to worry about me getting all clingy. It’s just sex.”

“I can do just sex.”

She leaned forward and nipped at my bottom lip. “Then let’s do just sex, Detective Winston.”

She didn’t have to say another word as I wrapped my arms around her and blocked out Riley the best that I could. I reminded myself that she was seeing someone else, so she was probably having sex several times a week. There was nothing wrong with me having sex with Sam.

After we finished, I leaned back against my headboard and stared at the ceiling. Sam was curled against me, and then she sighed and sat up. “That was very nice.”

I chuckled. “You know, if anyone else said that, I might get offended.”

She grinned. “You can’t say that it was earth-shattering for you either.”

“No, I can’t, but you are right. It was nice.”

“Scratched the itch.”

“It did.”

She patted my chest. “Okay, then. I’m going to get dressed and get out of here.”

“You do that.” And she did. Over the weekend, we did that a couple more times, and Monday night, as we were lying in my bed, I contemplated something.

“Hey, you said you were staying here over break, right?”

“Yeah, Peter has Sadie at the beach for a few weeks.”

“You’re not going to go there?”

“Oh, god no! Peter’s girlfriend is with them.”
