“Oh, yeah, that would suck.” I hesitated. “You want to come back home with me?” Her eyes went wide, and I put my hand up. “No, not like that. Not as my girlfriend or with any strings. The offer is to get you out of here for a few days. You could check out how us country folks do police work in a small town.”

She laughed. “You sure your family wouldn’t mind?”

“Not at all. They are always welcoming of friends.”

“They wouldn’t think it was weird that you are bringing me back when we aren’t an item?”

I shrugged. “We don’t have to tell them that.”

“What are you talking about, Ethan?” She laughed loudly, then she smirked. “Ah—you want it to look like you have moved on from Riley, don’t you?”

I shook my head, but I was laughing. “No, okay, fine. Yeah, I guess that’s stupid.”

She squeezed my arm. “It’s not stupid. I get it. I did the same thing with Peter. I dated a guy for several months just to prove I was over him, but I wasn’t in the slightest.” She punched me in the arm. “Fine. You can use me and try to make her jealous.”

“I’m not trying to make her jealous.” I barked out a laugh. “I just want to show her that I’m okay and moving on.”

She threw her head back and laughed. “You are so full of shit, Ethan. I’ll go with you because I really don’t want to sit around here for four days alone, but we will talk about this whole making her jealous thing later.”

“Great. It will be fun.”

“Oh, I’m sure it will be.”

After Sam went back to her room, I wondered if that invite had been a mistake. But then I realized that I had to move on, and Riley needed to see that I had.

What really sucked was that Riley was still right there in the center of my mind and heart, no matter what I tried.
