Chapter Twelve

Ethan

Istretched her hands toward the headboard. “What were you going to say?” I whispered before I kissed her neck.

She giggled. “I was going to say that I was hungry.”

I kissed my way up the column of her neck to her chin and over to her mouth. “What? I’m not enough?”

Sam took hold of my face and stared at me. “Oh, you are enough for pleasure, but I have worked up an appetite.”

My phone began to ring, and I winked at her before rolling off of her. “You’re lucky.”

Sam and I had stayed a hotel last night after people in our class started making comments about us spending so much time together. I sat on the side of the hotel bed and saw Cara’s number on my screen. “Hey, what’s up, sis?”

“Hey, Ethan, you are still coming home today, right?” she asked, sounding serious.

“Yeah, what’s going on?”

“Just checking to see what time.”

I glanced at my watch. “I’ll be heading to the airport in a few minutes. What’s going on? You sound upset.”

“It’s nothing. I’ll tell you about it when you get here. When you get in, just come straight over to Mom and Dad’s.” Did her voice just catch in her throat? “Have a safe flight. I love you, Ethan.”

I frowned. “I love you too, Cara. I’ll see you this afternoon. You sure you don’t want to tell me what’s going on?”

“It is nothing that won’t wait. I’ll see you later. Let me know when you’ve landed.”

“Alright, I will.” She disconnected before I could say anything else, and I scowled at the phone.

“Something wrong?” Sam asked from the other side of the bed.

“I don’t know. My sister is upset about something but didn’t want to talk about it over the phone. She wants us to come to my parents’ house as soon as we get in.”

She leaned up on her elbow. “You sure you still want me to come?”

“Of course. I’m sure it’s nothing. Coral or Candy probably did something stupid, and we are going to have a family meeting about it, or maybe Evan decided to follow his girlfriend across the US after all.” I glanced at my watch again. “We should probably shower and head to the airport. If we get checked in early enough, we can grab a decent lunch before the flight.”

As we got dressed and headed to the airport, I felt a sense of unease fill my gut. Cara was always cool. She handled pressure like it was just another walk in the park. Something bad happened at home to shake her. Had something happened to Riley?

A sense of panic began to fill me, and I shifted in my seat. The hotel shuttle was taking us from the hotel to the airport, and I suddenly felt that I needed to move. Shit! What if something happened to Riley?

No, if something serious had happened, Cara would have told me—right? Whatever this was, it wasn’t that important. I was not going to stress over it.

I glanced at Sam. I liked her. I really liked the fact that we had no emotions and no strings. She had her life in New York, and I had no intention of leaving mine anytime soon.

I could see Sam and I being friends for years, and I was glad that things were as easy as they were with her. She’d told me all about her husband and her past boyfriend, and I had shared the drama with Riley. Maybe if things were different and we were living closer, it could have been more, but what we had was good.

I smiled at her, thankful for her friendship. I had a feeling I might be leaning on that friendship quite a bit in the next few hours.

I was looking forwardto a home-cooked meal, especially after our long day. We were supposed to land at three but didn’t get in until after five. By the time we got our luggage and the rental car, it was almost six.

Cara had sent me several messages while my phone was off. As soon as I saw them, that uneasy feeling began to slip through my veins again. I told her we were finally on our way.

An hour later, we pulled down the driveway to my parents’. “Shit,” I muttered as I took in all the cars.
