“Thank god you are here, Ethan. I’m Doctor Rutherford. Can we do the delivery now, please?”

“Yes, sir,” I said to him as I took the chair next to Riley. I peered around the curtain and saw her huge belly jutting up from the center of a sea of blue dressings. The doctor put a scalpel to her stomach, and I quickly looked away. I wasn’t ready to watch that shit!

Instead, I stared at Riley. “I’m so sorry, Ry.”

“Hush, the only thing you have to apologize for is not being around to put all the baby stuff together.”

I chuckled as I wiped a tear from her face.

“I love you, Ethan. I love you more than I could have ever imagined loving someone. When I thought you might die, I wanted to curl up in bed with you and go with you. I couldn’t imagine a world without you in it with our baby.”

“I’m here, Riley. I’m here as long as you want me, baby.”

“Marry me, Ethan,” Riley said in a rush. “Please!”

“Figures you’d ask me.” I chuckled. “Yes, I’ll marry you, baby.”

“Ethan?” I lifted my head to the doctor as he called my name. He glanced my way. “If you want to see your child being born, stand up and look over the curtain now.”

I glanced at Riley, and she nodded. I stood as I held her hand in mine and watched as the doctor pulled a tiny human out of Riley’s belly. He held the baby up for only a second for me to see, and then someone took the baby from him, and he handed me a pair of scissors.

“Do you want to do the honors?”

I nodded and took them from his hand, reaching over the curtain to snip the cord. A few moments later, there was a wail on the side of the room, and I looked down at Riley as she started to laugh and cry at the same time.

“We have a baby girl,” she said as I leaned forward to kiss her.

I smiled through my tears. “We have a baby girl.”
