Chapter Thirty

Riley

Iwasn’t sure that Ethan would make it, and I swore that they were not going to do this surgery before he arrived. When I got word that he was here, my tension eased, but I still wouldn’t let them start until he was seated beside me.

To see him as emotional as I was told me that I had made the right decision. This was where our future needed to start. It needed to begin at the moment our daughter took her first breath in this world.

While both of us might blame ourselves, and maybe the other, a little bit for the accident, I knew that we would make it past that. Ethan and I had come too far not to.

I had every intention of being his wife and of building our family into something as special as what my parents and his parents had. I owed it to him. I owed it to myself.

It was funny how we learn things about ourselves and realize what we know about others. It was hours later after our families had come and seen the baby and wished us well when I lay back in bed and watched him stare down at our daughter, Corey. He was touching her little fingers as her other hand was curled under her chin.

“She sleeps like you. A hand tucked under her chin.”

I laughed. “I can’t wait to see how she is like you.”

“What do you mean?”

I smiled at him. “I mean, is she going to like whole wheat bagels and turkey bacon better than plain and real bacon? Or will she hang up her sweatpants as you do, instead of putting them in a drawer as most people do?”

He smirked at me, but I wasn’t done yet. “I wonder if she’ll eat all of her veggies before she eats her meat and potatoes or if she’ll like any kind of hot dog or be partial to only all-beef ones like you.”

He chuckled, and I continued. “I also wonder if she will like green as much as you do and if she’ll want a matching Flyers jersey so she can watch the games with you.”

He grinned. “See, you do know things about me.”

“Yeah, like a million little things,” I replied. “Over the last few weeks, I’ve been writing them all down and sharing them with Corey.”

“You have, huh?”

“Yeah. I wanted her to know as much about her father as she could.”

He stood and came to sit on the edge of the bed, his face a little sad. “I’m sorry that I missed it all, Riley. I really screwed up.”

“Well, I guess we will just have to do it all over again.”

He hiked a brow, and I put my hand up. “I mean, in a few years. I’m not sure I’m ready for that again quite yet.”

“You want to have another child with me?”

I reached up and touched his face. “I want to have three children with you, Ethan, and I want to grow old in your arms.”

“Well, how about before we have another kid, we just practice the art of making them—a lot.”

“Oh, I like that idea.”

He leaned forward, kissing me tenderly, and then stared down at me as he whispered, “You two are my everything, and I am going to do everything in my power to protect you and love you the best that I can.”

“That’s all we ask of you.” I smiled as I cupped his cheek. “That’s all we need from you.”
