“I’m not sleeping with you, Colt.”

He turned to me, “That’s not why I brought you here, Ember.”

I shrugged at him and watched the numbers flicker on the panel as we rose. At the tenth floor, the bell rang and the doors slid open. Was this the top floor? I hadn’t noticed how many floors there were.

“Are we on the top?”

“No, we’re one down. The top has the penthouses.”

“Oh,” I said stupidly as he led me to his door. “Why did you bring me back to your place if you weren’t expecting me to sleep with you?”

He shook his head sadly, “Have you never dated a man who was just being nice to you?”

“We’re not dating,” I retorted, but if we were, would I even want to date him?

“No, oh never mind. Come in, I want to show you something.” He pushed the door open, and I stepped cautiously inside. There was a foyer that was larger than my living room, and as I stepped past that, I stared at the opulence of his living room. There wasn’t one thing out of place.

The black leather couches and chairs filled up the space but didn’t overtake them. He had a flat screen television on his wall that was the size of my bed, and pictures along one wall that looked like friends and family.

Colt took my hand again and pulled me further into his home. I was so out of my league here. “Do you want a glass of wine?”

“Sure, if you’re having one.”

He nodded and let go of my hand as we reached his kitchen which was about the size of my living room, kitchen, and bathroom combined. I stared at his sparkling granite countertops and realized there wasn’t a thing out of place in here either. “Do you have a cleaning lady?”

“What?” he said as he reached into a cabinet and pulled down two glasses. “Oh, yeah, she comes once a week to do a big cleaning. The place is kind of a mess right now, but she’ll be by tomorrow to get it all back in shape.”

This was a mess? I shoved my hands into my back pockets and tried not to look intimidated. Thank god I didn’t take him back to my place.

Colt handed me a glass of red wine and then took my hand again. I was already starting to get used to the feel of his soft, strong fingers wrapped around my hand—which probably wasn’t very wise since I was going to listen to what he had to say and then take off.

Colt took me to a glass door and pushed it back, stepping out of the way to allow me to precede him. The view in front of me took my breath away.

His balcony had an incredible view of both the water in the distance and the lights of the city. I stood against his railing and allowed the breeze to caress me while my eyes took in all the colors, lights, and sounds of the city below. Oh, he plays dirty.

“Trying to soften me up, huh?” I said as I threw him a quick glance.

It was dark on the balcony, and I couldn’t make out his features so much as the outlines of them. I heard his soft chuckle, and it wrapped around me in a way no man’s ever had. I turned back to the view.

“So talk,” I commanded.

Colt stood a few feet away, gazing out over the city. “I love the view from here. Seeing all of this makes me feel so small, and yet part of something bigger.”

“I can see that.” I sipped my wine and let it roll over my tongue for a moment before swallowing it. “The wine is good. What is it?”

“An Australian Shiraz, one of my favorites.”

“Which means expensive, right?” I tried to joke and was glad he laughed back.

“Actually, it’s only about twelve dollars a bottle.”

“Really?”

He nodded. “Ember, I’m sorry if what I said earlier hurt you. I wasn’t trying to. What I was trying to tell you was that you deserve better. I just want the opportunity to show you that.”

“How?”

“Well, I mentioned at the restaurant not picking up random guys.”
